Ceramides are oils (also known as lipids) that appear naturally in your skin.
They’re used to support your skin barrier and help lock in moisture. If you think of your skin barrier as a brick wall-like structure, lipids like ceramides are the mortar that holds the bricks together.
When you’re young, your body creates lots of ceramides naturally, but as we grow older our ceramides deplete.
Fewer ceramides mean that your skin can be more prone to moisture loss, dryness, cracking, and irritation.
