Solpadeine Max (Codeine/Paracetamol) is used for the short-term treatment of moderate pain when other painkillers haven’t worked.
You can take these tablets to relieve pain caused by migraines, sprains, strains, sciatica and oral pain.
How Solpadeine Max (Codeine/Paracetomol) works
Solpadeine Max (Codeine/Paracetamol) contains paracetamol, codeine and caffeine.
Paracetamol is an analgesic which works to relieve pain. It works by blocking the chemical messengers in the brain that tell you when you have pain.
Codeine is also used to relieve pain and belongs to a group of medicines known as opioid analgesics, which work in the central nervous system and the brain, blocking pain messages to the rest of the body.
Caffeine is used to help enhance the effects of paracetamol.
Directions
Always take Solpadeine Max (Codeine/Paracetamol) exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you.
Adults: Dissolve 2 tablets in 200ml of water every 4-6 hours as needed. Do not take more frequently than every 4 hours and no more than 8 tablets in 24 hours.
Adolescents between 16 and 18 years old: Dissolve 1-2 tablets in 200ml of water every 6 hours as needed. Do not take more frequently than every 6 hours and no more than 8 tablets in 24 hours.
Adolescents between 12 and 15 years old: Dissolve 1 tablet in 200ml of water every 6 hours as needed. Do not take more frequently than every 6 hours and no more than 4 tablets in 24 hours.
Do not take this medication for more than 3 consecutive days.
Side effects
Solpadeine Max (Codeine/Paracetamol) may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Common side effects of this medication include:
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Constipation
- Nausea

Serious side effects
Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness.
If you experience any of the following side effects, stop taking this medication straight away and seek medical advice immediately:
- Severe abdominal pain, dry mouth, nausea and vomiting if you have recently had your gallbladder removed
- Skin rashes, peeling, mouth ulcers, itching and sweating
- Nervousness, dizziness, irritability, drowsiness and restlessness
- Breathing problems
- Unexplained bruising or bleeding
- Nausea, upset stomach, sudden weight loss, loss of appetite and yellowing of the eyes and skin
- Cloudy urine or difficulty urinating
Warnings
Solpadeine Max (Codeine/Paracetamol) may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not take these tablets if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or:
- For pain relief in children and adolescents after the removal of their tonsils or adenoids due to obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome
- If you know you metabolise codeine into morphine very rapidly
- If you have respiratory depression
- If you have chronic constipation
Talk to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist before taking this medicine if:
- Your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to certain sugars or you are on a sodium-controlled diet
- You have liver or kidney disease, including alcoholic liver disease
- You have bowel problems or a blockage in your bowels
- You have had an operation to remove your gallbladder
- You have hypotension or hypothyroidism
- You have experienced a recent head injury or raised intracranial pressure
- You have asthma
- You have Gilbert’s syndrome
- You have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency
- You have haemolytic anaemia
- You have glutathione deficiency
- You are dehydrated
- You have a poor diet that causes health problems
- You weigh less than 50kg
- You are elderly
- You have myasthenia gravis
Using/taking other medicines
If you are taking or have recently taken any medication, including medication obtained without a prescription, talk to your GP or pharmacist before taking this medicine.
You must tell your healthcare provider if you are taking the following medication:
- Metoclopramide or domperidone for nausea and vomiting
- Cholestyramine to lower blood cholesterol
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or you have taken them in the last 2 weeks
- Medication that makes you drowsy e.g. sedatives or antidepressants
- Anticoagulants e.g. warfarin
- Medication to treat gout or hyperuricemia e.g. probenecid
- The antibiotic flucloxacillin
- Pregabalin or gabapentin
Age restrictions
This medication is not suitable for children under 12 years old.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Do not take this product if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist for advice before taking any new medicine.
Alcohol
Do not drink alcohol whilst you are taking this medication.
Driving and operating machinery
This medication may cause you to feel drowsy or sleepy. Do not drive or operate machinery until you feel safe enough to do so.
Storage information
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, referring to the last day of the month stated on the packaging. Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste.
