Colloidal oatmeal is a soothing natural ingredient found in moisturisers from popular brands like Aveeno.
It’s traditionally used to moisturise and protect your sensitive skin, perfect for those who have dry or eczema-prone skin and are looking for a gentle way to care for their skin every day.
You can find colloidal oatmeal in creams, ointments, moisturisers, body washes, shampoos, and many other skincare products, so you’ll never be left without your favourite remedy as you care for your dry skin.
Colloidal oatmeal is a traditionally used remedy for dry or sensitive skin, with some believing that the practise dates back to ancient Egypt.
It’s a natural ingredient which contains chemical compounds known as Avenathramides, which are thought to contain the oat’s soothing properties.
This natural remedy moisturises and soothes irritated skin, while some formulations work as an emollient or barrier cream, forming a protective layer over your sensitive skin and keeping irritants at bay.
The oatmeal can also help to cleanse the skin, clearing away impurities that can irritate your sensitive skin and exfoliating dead skin cells at the same time.
Some colloidal oatmeal products can be used to soothe dry skin on the face.
However, you should read the patient information leaflet that comes with your product carefully, to be sure it’s safe for you to use in that area.
If you experience dry skin on your face regularly or have eczema, dermatitis, or another dry skin condition on your face, you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist so they can recommend a product that will be right for you.
If your product is suitable to use on your face, you should still remember to avoid contact with your eyes, inside your nose and mouth, or other sensitive areas.
There are some products which contain colloidal oatmeal that are suitable for babies’ sensitive skin, for example, the Aveeno Baby range.
This range includes cleansers, emollient creams, and body washes.
If you’re unsure whether colloidal oatmeal products are suitable for your baby, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using these products.
