Unwanted Facial Hair & Hirsutism

Hirsutism is the medical name for excessive hair growth, growing as thick, dark hair on your face, neck, body, or legs. Some women can find this hair problematic or even embarrassing, although it isn’t a condition that you usually need to worry about.

Unwanted facial hair is often caused by an increase in certain hormones, and it’s common in people with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), although it can also be brought on by other conditions which affect hormones.

Remember, your final treatment will be decided by our prescribers based on your answers provided within your consultation. You will be asked to indicate a preferred treatment option from a selected list after completion of your consult.

How do unwanted facial hair & hirsutism treatments work?

Treatments for female facial hair and other excessive hair growth include eflornithine, which is found in Vaniqa, and the contraceptive pill in some cases.

Contraceptive pills work because they help to control your hormone levels, and although this is normally used to help prevent pregnancy it has the added bonus of regulating hormones that can cause hirsutism.

It’s a nice added bonus if you’re also looking for long term birth control.

On the other hand, Vaniqa works to slow down hair growth by affecting the enzymes your body uses to create hair, making it more manageable in those who find hair removal difficult or inconvenient.

It can also be used in women who don’t want to take the contraceptive pill for any reason.

If your unwanted facial hair is knocking your confidence or is difficult to manage, have a quick consultation with one of our prescribers and if they think it will help they’ll write you a prescription for a hirsutism treatment that we can send out to you quickly and discreetly.
