What causes dry skin?
There are a number of different causes of dry skin. This includes both external and internal factors. External factors that can cause dry skin include:
- Weather conditions
- Seasonal – winter and summer especially
- UV sunlight

- Using strong soaps
- Certain types of medication
Besides the environment and other external factors, there are also internal factors that can cause dry skin. These can be:
- Hormonal changes such as menopause
- Genetics – some people naturally have drier skin than others
Dry skin is the result of the skin barrier becoming damaged and it resulting in a loss of moisture. This means that any treatment used needs to be able to restore the skin barrier and help to keep moisture in the skin.
