What lotion can I use on my baby?
Babies have delicate skin, so you’ll need to use a gentle moisturiser specifically designed for babies, or just a simple baby oil.
If your baby’s skin is very dry or cracked, avoid using creams or lotions unless told otherwise by a doctor.
You may use a natural plant-based oil like almond oil or olive oil to relieve dry skin if necessary.
When should you moisturise your baby’s skin?
It’s best to apply moisturiser to your baby after their skin has been exposed to dry air, after a bath, and when their skin is noticeably dry due to sensitivity, irritation or eczema.
It’s important not to confuse the white, sticky layer on your newborn’s skin as dryness - this is called the vernix, a natural moisturiser that protects them against infection in their first few days of life.
What is baby oil used for?
Baby oil is specially formulated to keep your baby or toddler’s delicate skin soft, healthy and moisturised.
You can use baby oil during a baby massage, which is a great way to connect with your baby and may even improve their sleep.
Please note: the NHS recommends waiting until your baby is one month old before you start using any oils or lotions.
What is baby powder?
Baby powder, or talcum powder, is designed to keep your baby’s skin cool and comfortable whilst relieving irritation caused by friction.
It’s made from the naturally occurring mineral talc, which absorbs moisture and reduces friction when powdered.
