Frequently Asked Questions

There are multiple types of conjunctivitis (otherwise known as pink eye) - viral, bacterial and allergic.

Viral conjunctivitis may clear up on its own, but it’s best to ask your doctor or pharmacist to see what is causing the infection.

You may need an antibiotic ointment if the cause is bacterial by using a treatment such as GoldenEye Antibiotic Ointment which can help to ease the condition in as little as 5 days.

You might also wish to use a product to create artificial tears like Liquivisc Eye Gel which can relieve any dryness and inflammation caused by conjunctivitis.

Conjunctivitis is the infection or inflammation of the membrane lining the eyelid and eyeball.

It is often caused by viral infections that are highly contagious, spreading through hand-to-eye contact.

You can prevent catching conjunctivitis by practising good hand hygiene and avoiding sharing towels, pillows, eye drops, makeup brushes, contact lenses or glasses with an infected person.

Your eyes might become bloodshot or red due to lack of sleep, excessive screen time or swimming in a chlorinated pool, amongst other reasons.

Bloodshot eyes are usually harmless and are caused when the blood vessels on the surface of the eye burst, causing the whites of your eyes to take on a pink or red tinge.

There are treatments to reduce or alleviate the appearance of bloodshot eyes, like Optrex Bloodshot eye drops, which work to remove redness and restore the normal blood flow in the eye.

Styes are red, tender, itchy bumps that usually appear around the rim of the eyelid.

They occur when glands around the eye are blocked, and may go away on their own without treatment, but you may wish to soothe your symptoms with an antibiotic eye ointment to eliminate the infection.

If your stye is persistent, your healthcare provider may wish to give you oral antibiotics.
