What is Optrex Bacterial Conjunctivitis Chloramphenicol 1% Ointment?

This ointment is a topical treatment for the eyes that works as an antibiotic. It treats bacterial infections on the outer surface of the eye, most of these are acute bacterial conjunctivitis. The active ingredient in this ointment is chloramphenicol which is an antibiotic that can be used to treat a number of bacterial infections. As an ointment, it is only suitable to be used on surface infections.


Who is this ointment suitable for?

This Optrex Ointment is suitable to be used anyone aged 2 and over who are suffering from the effects of acute bacterial conjunctivitis. It should not be used by anyone who is allergic to any of the ingredients contained in the ointment. If you have had problems relating to your blood in the past, such as a low blood cell count, then do not use this ointment. You should also not use if your eyesight has been affected in any way or suffer from glaucoma. If you are using any other type of eye ointment, then do not use this one.


Can this ointment be used when wearing contact lenses?

If you wear contact lenses, then you should not use this ointment unless you have been instructed to do so by a doctor. When using this ointment, do not use contact lenses at any point during the treatment process.


Can this ointment be used when pregnant or breastfeeding?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, then speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using.


How should Optrex Bacterial Conjunctivitis Chloramphenicol 1% Ointment be used?

Wash and dry your hands before using. Remove the tube, ensuring that you do not touch the nozzle at any point, and then pull down the bottom eyelid and look up. When doing this, make sure the tube does not touch any skin or the eye. Place the tube nozzle close to the eye and apply 1cm of ointment to the space between the eyelid and the eye. Then, close the eye for a short period. If you need to apply to both eyes, then repeat the applying process. Apply the ointment at night before going to bed. Only use it for a maximum of 5 days.


Are there any side effects when using this ointment?

Like with many medicines, there is a chance of side effects. Potential side effects include:

  • Itching
  • A rash
  • Tiredness
  • Blurred vision
  • Stinging in the eye
  • Easy bruising

If you notice a side effect, then speak to a doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible. You can also report any side effect using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.

You only need to use the drops during waking hours. If you're just using the ointment, a strip of ointment approximately 1cm in length should be applied to the inside of the eyelid three to four times a day. Chloramphenicol eye drops and eye ointment can also be used together to treat bacterial conjunctivitis.
