Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy terbinafine over the counter?

Terbinafine creams, gels, and other solutions are available over the counter from pharmacies. You may need to answer some questions first, depending on the product, but this is perfectly normal and helps your pharmacist to be sure you’re using the right medication for you. If you’re ever unsure about using any medication, speak to your doctor or pharmacist for advice before use.

Can I get oral terbinafine without a prescription?

Terbinafine is available in oral remedies like tablets, but these are only available on prescription.

If you think you’d need oral terbinafine, you should speak to your doctor about your fungal infection, so they can give you advice about treatments and a prescription if necessary.

What is Hydrocortisone Cream?

Hydrocortisone cream is a topical treatment for eczema, dermatitis, insect bites and stings, and other itchy skin conditions.

It’s a steroid or corticosteroid cream, which means it’s very effective when treating dry, itchy, irritated, or inflamed skin.

Hydrocortisone may be the perfect remedy for you, especially if you find that other treatments like moisturising creams or emollients just aren’t right for you.

Can hydrocortisone be used at the same time as other topical treatments, like miconazole or clotrimazole?

Hydrocortisone can be used at the same time as antifungal treatments such as miconazole and clotrimazole, but you shouldn’t try to use them both at once without speaking to your doctor or pharmacist first.

They will probably recommend that you use a product which already contains both active ingredients in the right proportions, for example, Canesten HC cream contains clotrimazole and hydrocortisone in one cream, and Daktacort contains hydrocortisone and miconazole in one cream.

If you have thrush or a fungal infection, HC cream won’t be enough to clear your infection alone, so your doctor may recommend one of these creams instead.

They use the anti-inflammatory and anti-itch properties of hydrocortisone, and the anti-fungal properties of miconazole or clotrimazole all in one, easing symptoms and treating the cause of your infection at the same time.
