Frequently Asked Questions

Is ActiPatch similar to a TENS machine?

Unlike a TENS machine, you will not feel heat or vibration with ActiPatch. ActiPatch is completely sensation free. TENS machines are designed to provide pain relief by blocking pain signals, with treatments typically lasting 20-30 minutes. ActiPatch was designed to reduce pain and inflammation and thereby promote healing. Unlike a TENS machine, ActiPatch can be used continuously and for long periods, a lightweight solution that is attached with adhesive or inserted in a wrap/bandage.

What are TENS machines?

TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, and it is a method of pain relief that uses a mild electrical current. A TENS machine is a small device with leads connected to sticky pads (electrodes). These pads are stuck onto your skin to deliver small electrical impulses to the affected area, which can help to reduce pain signals and relax muscles. They may also be able to stimulate the production of endorphins, your body's natural painkillers.

Should I use a heat pack or a cold pack?

Cold (cryotherapy) and heat (thermotherapy) are both great ways of reducing pain. Heat can boost blood flow to the area, ideal for stiffness or warming up muscles before physical activity. On the other hand, cold slows down blood flow to the area, reducing swelling and pain associated with injuries like strains and sprains. If you suffer with a long term condition like arthritis, experiment with hot and cold therapies to see which works best for you.

How does heat therapy relieve pain?

Heat therapy (thermotherapy) dilates blood vessels, therefore increasing bloodflow. This is why heat therapy is a great way to treat stiffness, as it improves blood circulation deep into the muscles. Bear in mind that cold therapy does the opposite, it slows down blood flow to the area and is therefore more suitable for pain and swelling following an injury.
