Frequently Asked Questions

Can acid reflux cause vomiting and diarrhoea?

You can experience vomiting and diarrhoea with acid reflux, but it isn’t common.

You might just be sensitive to the sour taste in your mouth caused by acid reflux that may have made you vomit.

Try taking over-the-counter antacids to ease your symptoms, but if they last longer than 72 hours, it’s important to get your symptoms checked with a medical professional.

What is the best diarrhoea treatment?

If you want a diarrhoea treatment that works quickly, try an over-the-counter product like loperamide (Imodium) or Pepto-Bismol.

Antibiotics may be given if it’s caused by a bacteria or parasite which you may have gotten from consuming food or water that’s been contaminated.

Diarrhoea that’s caused by a viral infection cannot be treated with antibiotics - you may want to try treatments at home, like eating bland foods, taking probiotics and drinking rice water.

What causes traveller’s diarrhoea?

Traveller’s diarrhoea is caused by drinking or eating food that contains bacteria, viruses and parasites.

You can prevent yourself from getting diarrhoea whilst travelling by avoiding unsafe water, such as buying bottled water or boiling the water first.

Try to avoid eating raw fish, meat or vegetables, and don’t put ice in your drink.

What is the best treatment for traveller’s diarrhoea?

If your traveller’s diarrhoea is mild, you typically won’t need treatment - you’ll start to feel better after rest and plenty of fluids.

If your diarrhoea is starting to get in the way of your trip, you could try an anti-diarrhoeal medication that hardens your stool and reduces stomach discomfort.
