What is Oilatum Junior Bath Additive?

Oilatum Junior Bath Additive is an emollient bath additive that can help to hydrate and protect dry, eczema-prone skin. It’s perfect for children of all ages, including infants, who have sensitive skin and find that other bath additives or cleansers irritate their skin and cause flare-ups. If you’re looking for a bath product that will help to protect your little one’s sensitive skin on a daily basis, Oilatum Junior Bath Additive could be the perfect choice for you.

What is eczema?

Eczema is a common dry skin condition that makes your skin feel itchy and irritated and look red and inflamed. Eczema is particularly common in children, although many people find that they grow out of it as they get older. When you have eczema, you will usually go through stages where your symptoms are worse than usual, known as flare-ups. Flare-ups can happen when you come into contact with something that irritates your skin, for example, some soaps or detergents which use harsh ingredients that irritate sensitive skin.

How will Oilatum Junior Emollient Bath Additive help to protect my child’s dry or eczema-prone skin?

Oilatum Junior Bath Additive contains an active ingredient called light liquid paraffin, which is an emollient. Emollients help to protect dry or eczema-prone skin by forming a protective layer over the skin, keeping moisture locked in so your skin is hydrated. It also helps to keep irritants from aggravating your sensitive skin, helping to prevent flare-ups of eczema, dermatitis and similar dry skin conditions.

Can I use this product if I’m using other skincare products?

If you or your child are using other products to manage your eczema or dry skin condition then you can still use Oilatum Junior Bath Additive as well. Some people use emollient bath additives as well as their other skincare to help to protect their skin from hot water and some soaps, which can dry their skin out further and may trigger flare-ups of eczema. If you’re using any other medicated products on your skin then you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using this product to make sure that the two medicines won’t interact.

How to use this product

The amount of Oilatum Junior Emollient Bath Additive you will need to use will depend on how you want to use it:

  • For a bath: Add 1 - 3 capfuls of Oilatum bath additive to an 8-inch bath of water. Soak in the bath for 10 - 20 minutes and then gently pat the skin dry
  • For an infant’s bath: Add a half - 2 capfuls of Oilatum bath additive to a small bath of water. Apply the bathwater solution over your infant’s entire body with a sponge and then gently pat their skin dry
  • To cleanse the skin: Rub a small amount of this product onto wet skin, rinse, and then gently pat the skin dry

When should this product not be used?

Do not use Oilatum Junior Bath Additive if you or your child are allergic to light liquid paraffin or any of the other listed ingredients. For external use only, avoid contact with eyes. After using this product the surface of your bath or shower may become slippery, so take care not to fall. The light liquid paraffin in this product is an effective emollient but it is also extremely flammable. Keep away from any fire, open flames, or other sources of ignition while using this product. Make sure to change any clothing, bedding, dressings, or other fabrics that come into contact with this product regularly and keep them away from sources of fire.

Does Oilatum Junior Bath Additive have any side effects?

Like all medications, Oilatum Junior Bath Additive can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. These include symptoms caused by allergic reactions, including skin irritation and rashes. If you experience this or any other side effect while using this product, stop use and speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting the side effects of medication, please see the MHRA’s Yellow Card Scheme.
