How to use
Before taking the test you should fast for a minimum of 8 hours. You should take the test first thing in the morning before eating.
If you do not fast before taking the test, the reference ranges provided could be inaccurate. This could mean that you might not receive the right advice.
Rules for fasting:
- Try to take your sample in the morning
- Stay hydrated by only drinking clear water (no diluted squash drinks)
- Fast for at least 8 hours before taking your sample
- Discuss with your GP if fasting could affect your medication routine
- If you feel unwell from fasting, eat and try to take the test another day
When you receive the test kit, all you need to do is take a simple finger prick sample, using the lancets that are provided in the box. Once you have done this, you can then register it online and post your kit to the laboratory using the envelope enclosed.
Your results are reviewed by the in-house GPs who will highlight any cause for concern that may need further investigation by your doctor. You will receive your full report via email, showing your results and how they compare with the normal reference ranges. You should expect to get your results the day after the lab receives your sample.
Who should use this kit?
High cholesterol typically has no signs or symptoms. The only way to know if you have high cholesterol levels is to take a test.
The test might be useful to you if you want to find out if you have high levels of cholesterol and are at risk of developing heart disease.
How does high cholesterol affect your health?
High cholesterol levels put you at an increased risk of heart disease because it can lead to fatty deposits building up in the walls of your arteries. These can gradually grow, making it hard for blood to flow through your vessels. This puts increased pressure on the heart and can consequently lead to a heart attack or stroke.
