What is Benzoyl Peroxide and when is it used?

Acnecide gel containing 5% Benzoyl Peroxide is ideal for treating smaller areas (e.g. the face) where Acne occurs. Benzoyl Peroxide has been shown to help reduce P. Acnes bacteria. The product contains Acrylates Copolymer beads, a special technology designed to remove excess oiliness and release Glycerine to hydrate and moisturise the skin.

How will it treat my symptoms

How long you will have to use Acnecide will depend on how quickly your condition improves. After you have used it for one month, you should see your doctor or pharmacist again. He or she can then check the improvement of your condition. You should start treatment with the lower strength product. Provided your skin tolerates the lower strength gel, your doctor or pharmacist may recommend continued treatment with a higher strength gel to further help clear your acne.

Benzoyl Peroxide works by unclogging skin pores. It also helps stop bacteria from growing and causing acne pimples and cystic lesions.

Can I buy Benzoyl Peroxide Over the Counter?

Yes, you don’t need a prescription to buy this dose, some doses will require a prescription but this one does not. A pharmacist will need to ensure the treatment is suitable and safe for you.

Some over the counter medicines are only allowed to be sold under the supervision of a pharmacist. Benzoyl Peroxide is one of these medicines.

Just like when you buy this medicine in a high street or local pharmacy, the pharmacist will need to ask you a few questions. This is a legal requirement for selling this type of medicine.

You may not always realise when your local pharmacist asks you the required questions, as this can sometimes be done subtly. When sold online, we need to make sure our pharmacists have all the information they need to ensure this treatment is right for you.
