What is Rennie Liquid Heartburn Relief?
Rennie Liquid Heartburn Relief is a liquid medicine which helps to ease heartburn, acid reflux, and indigestion. It’s ideal for those who suffer with heartburn or indigestion and don’t like to take solid remedies, such as Rennie tablets, and it has a delicious peppermint flavour.
What is heartburn?
Heartburn is a symptom of acid reflux, which happens when your stomach acid tries to work its way upwards out of your stomach and towards your throat. It’s a common condition which can be triggered by eating certain foods, such as coffee, alcohol, chocolate, or fatty or spicy foods. It can also be caused by other factors, such as pregnancy, stress, anxiety, smoking, or being overweight. If you have acid reflux or heartburn, you may notice the following symptoms:
- A burning sensation in the middle of your chest, behind the heart
- An unpleasant taste in the mouth
- A cough
- Hiccups
- Bad breath
- A hoarse voice
- Feeling sick
- Becoming bloated
How will this medicine help to treat my heartburn?
Rennie Liquid Heartburn Relief contains three active ingredients which work together to ease heartburn and indigestion:
- Sodium bicarbonate
- Sodium alginate
- Calcium carbonate
It forms a protective layer over the contents of your stomach, keeping your stomach acid from moving upwards into the food pipe and causing discomfort and unpleasant symptoms.
Can I take this medicine if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?
This medicine is safe to use during pregnancy or if you are breastfeeding. However, you should speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using this or any other medication at this time, to be sure that it is suitable for both you and your child.
Can I use this product if I’m taking other medication?
Some medicines can interact when taken together, causing unwanted side effects or making your medication less effective. You should speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before taking this product if you are taking any other medication, including those obtained without prescription. This includes:
- Antibiotics, including tetracyclines and quinolones, e.g. norfloxacin
- Iron preparation
- Antifungal medications, e.g. ketoconazole
- Digoxin and beta blockers, which are used to treat heart conditions
- Penicillamine, which is used for rheumatoid arthritis
- Glucocorticoid, which is used for inflammatory and autoimmune disorders
- Neuroleptics, which are used for mental illness
- Thyroid hormones
- Chloroquine, which is used for malaria
- Estramustine, which is used for prostate cancer
- Bisphosphonates, which is used for osteoporosis
Can children take this medicine?
Rennie Liquid Heartburn Relief can be used by children over the age of 6 who are suffering with indigestion or heartburn. However, children who are taking this medicine should always be supervised by a responsible adult.
How to take Rennie Liquid Heartburn Relief
Before using this medicine, shake the bottle well. Take Rennie Liquid Heartburn Relief by mouth, as needed, after meals and at bedtime.
- For adults and children over the age of 12: Take 10 – 20ml (2 – 4 x 5ml spoonfuls) up to four times a day
- For children aged 6 – 12: Take 5 – 10ml (1 – 2 x 5ml spoonfuls) up to four times a day
When should Rennie Liquid Heartburn Relief not be used?
Rennie Liquid Heartburn Relief is not suitable for children under the age of 6. Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the listed ingredients. Speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before taking this product if you have been advised to follow a low sodium (salt) diet, as this product contains small amounts of sodium.
Does this medicine have any side effects?
Like all medications, Rennie Liquid Heartburn Relief can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. These include:
- Allergic reaction, showing symptoms such as skin rash, difficulty breathing, dizziness, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.

How to store this medicine
Store in a cool, dry place which is below 25 degrees C. Do not refrigerate. Store in original packaging and do not use if expiry date printed on packaging has passed. Keep out of sight and reach of children.

Ingredients
Each 5 ml of this medicine contains 133.5 mg Sodium Bicarbonate, 250 mg Sodium Alginate, 80 mg Calcium Carbonate. It also contains carbomer, sodium hydroxide, saccharin sodium, ethyl parahydroxybenzoate (E214), propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), butyl parahydroxybenzoate, isopropyl alcohol, peppermint oil and purified water.
