Gaviscon Advance Aniseed Flavoured Suspension – 500ml

Checked By

What is Gaviscon Advance Suspension?

Gaviscon Advance is an oral solution for indigestion and heartburn. It is part of a group of medicines known as Reflux Suppressants.

How does it help?

Reflux Suppressants work by forming a protective layer over the stomach that prevents stomach acid from escaping up into the food pipe. This protective layer can last for three to four hours before being broken down. While it is active, this protective layer helps to relieve the effects of indigestion and heartburn. Gaviscon also contains an antacid that neutralises excess stomach acid and reduces pain and discomfort.

Which flavour works best?

Gavison Advance comes in two flavours, aniseed and peppermint but they are equally effective and contain the same active ingredients, sodium alginate and potassium bicarbonate.

Is Gaviscon Advance right for me?

Gavison Advance is designed to help relieve the symptoms of indigestion and heartburn. If you are uncertain if you have indigestion, you should contact a GP.

Identifying indigestion

Indigestion is quite a common condition that affects most people. Indigestion can be caused by,

  • Stress
  • Over-eating
  • Certain foods you are sensitive to, e.g. spicy or fatty foods
  • Pregnancy
  • Smoking
  • Drinking Alcohol

Symptoms of indigestion include:

  • Belching
  • Nausea
  • Feeling bloated

The cause of indigestion is usually excess stomach acid coming into contact with the lining of the stomach. Another symptom of indigestion is acid reflux, also known as heartburn.

Who shouldn't take Gaviscon Advance Suspension

This medicine is suitable for adults and children aged 12 and over. Anyone who is allergic to any of the ingredients (see tab above) used in Gaviscon Advance should not use it. For children under the age of 12, speak to a doctor for advice on what medicine to use.

In addition, the NHS Medicine reference on Gavison says;

  • It's safe to take paracetamol at the same time as Gaviscon but do not have ibuprofen or aspirin with it.
  • If you've bought Gaviscon without a prescription, do not take it for longer than 7 days without checking with a doctor.

Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use this treatment?

This medicine is suitable to be used by someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, though the amount used should be kept to a minimum. For advice, speak to a doctor or midwife if you are unsure how much to use.

How should Gaviscon Advance Aniseed Flavoured Suspension be used?

Shake the bottle before use. Use 5-10ml (one or two teaspoonfuls) after meals and at bedtime so it can relieve your discomfort when the pain is worst. If you miss a dose do not double the next dose, just take it as normal.

It is generally safe to take Gaviscon up to 4 times a day.

Unless prescribed, Gaviscon Advance is intended for short term use. If you've been using it for 7 or more days and are still experiencing the symptoms of indigestion or pain, please talk to your doctor.
