What are Gaviscon Double Action Mint Flavour Tablets?

Gaviscon Double Action Tablets are a treatment for the effects of indigestion that work in 2 ways:

  • Neutralise stomach acid that is causing pain and discomfort in the stomach
  • Form a protective barrier over the stomach to soothe the pain caused by excess stomach acid.

The tablets work thanks to the three active ingredients; sodium alginate, calcium carbonate, and sodium bicarbonate.

What causes indigestion?

Indigestion is most commonly felt after eating a meal or drinking. You’ll know if you have indigestion if you have the following symptoms:

  • Heartburn/acid reflux
  • Feeling full or bloated
  • Nausea
  • Belching or burping
  • Passing wind
  • Bringing up food

The direct cause of indigestion isn’t always obvious. The acid in the stomach becomes irritated and this can cause the symptoms. Besides certain foods and drinks, alcohol, smoking, and medicines can be the cause of indigestion. In more serious cases, it can be caused by an ulcer in the stomach or even stomach cancer.

Who are these Gaviscon Tablets suitable for?

These tablets are suitable to be used by adults and children aged 12 and over. They should not be used by anyone who is allergic to the ingredients contained in the tablets. Speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using if any of the following applies to you:

  • Have severe kidney problems
  • A low level of phosphate in the blood
  • Have kidney or heart disease
  • Have reduced amounts of acid in the stomach

You should also seek advice before using if you are taking any other medication.

Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use these tablets?

These tablets can be used by someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, though the number of tablets taken should be kept to a minimum.

How should Gaviscon Double Action Mint Flavour Tablets be used?

When the symptoms are felt, take 2-4 tablets. They can also be taken at bedtime. Do not take more than 4 tablets a day. If symptoms persist after 7 days of use, speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist for advice.

Are there any side effects?

Like with any medicine, there is a chance of side effects but not everyone will get them. A likely cause of any side effect is an allergic reaction. If you notice a side effect, then speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist as soon as possible. You can also record a side effect using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
