What are Freestyle Optium Ketone Test Strips?

FreeStyle Optium Ketone Test Strips are specifically designed for self-testing your blood ketones. Measuring your blood ketones during hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar) and illness allows you to take action before ketoacidosis develops. If your blood sugar level is 11mmol/L or above, you should check your ketone level.

Which Freestyle devices are compatible?

Freestyle Optium Ketone Test Strips are compatible with Freestyle Optium and Optium Xceed. If you have a different device, these test strips will not work with your blood glucose meter and you will need to find the correct corresponding strips.

How to use these test strips

Start by thoroughly washing and drying your hands. Put a test strip into your compatible Freestyle meter and prick your fingertip with a clean lancing device. Squeeze out a drop of blood and touch it with the edge of your test strip. Within 5 seconds, your meter will display a blood ketone reading. Once you’ve recorded your reading, dispose of the test strip immediately and do not reuse.

What do blood ketone test results mean?

Lower than 0.6mmol/L is a normal reading. 0.6 to 1.5mmol/L means you're at a slightly increased risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and you should test again in 2 hours. 1.6 to 2.9mmol/L means you're at an increased risk of DKA and should contact your diabetes team or GP as soon as possible. 3mmol/L or above means you have a very high risk of DKA and should get medical help immediately.

Can you reuse test strips?

No, you can’t reuse test strips. If you attempt to reuse a test strip, your meter will tell you that the strip is invalid as soon as you insert it. If you get a reading at all, it cannot be trusted as an accurate reading as the strip has been tampered with. Manufacturers only put enough enzymes into the strip for one test and one test only - after it’s been used, there won’t be enough for another test.

Storage information

Store your test strips at room temperature and do not use them if they have been damaged in any way. Do not use the test strips after the expiry date.
