What are cold sores?
Cold sores are small spot-like blisters that usually develop on the lips and around the mouth. They’re caused by a virus called herpes simplex and they usually clear up by themselves within a week to 10 days. For the first few days after being infected with the virus, you may not experience any symptoms straight away, but an outbreak of cold sores may occur some time later. Cold sores usually start with an uncomfortable tingling, itching or burning sensation around your mouth before small, blisters appear. Cold sores can be uncomfortable but usually clear up without too much discomfort, however the herpes virus can cause a range of different symptoms in both children and adults.
Symptoms in children
Symptoms of cold sores in children can include:
- Swollen and irritated gums with small, painful sores in and around the mouth - this is known as herpes simplex gingivostomatitis
- Sore throat and swollen glands
- Excessive production of saliva
- High temperature
- Dehydration
- Feeling sick
- Headaches
In adults
Symptoms of herpes simplex viruses are rare in adults but the symptoms are similar to those experienced by children. It is possible to experience bad breath and painful sores in and around your mouth, which can develop into ulcers with grey or yellow centres.
How can Fenistil help to relieve cold sores?

The soothing cream helps to irritation caused by cold sores, to prevent you touching and itching the cold sores which can spread the virus to other parts of your mouth.
