Should I give my child supplements?

Consuming a varied, balanced diet and following a healthy lifestyle is the best way to receive all of the vitamins and minerals the body needs in order to work at its best. However, it isn’t always possible for all children. Fussy eaters and children with small appetites may miss out on important nutrients such as omega-3 and vitamins. It is recommended by the Department of Health that all children up to the age of 5 should take a supplement that contains Vitamin A, C and D to help replace the vitamins that have been missed in their diet. It is also recommended by the Department of Health that everyone over the age of 5 take a daily vitamin D supplement.

What is Omega - 3?

Omega - 3 is a family of fatty acids that should be included in our diet to maintain good health. The 3 types of Omega - 3 are:

  • Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)
  • Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
  • Docosahexanoic acid (DHA)

ALA cannot be made naturally by the body, so we have to consume it from foods such as vegetable oils, nuts (such as walnuts and hazelnuts) and leafy vegetables. EPA and DHA can be made from ALA in our bodies and it’s these 2 types that have the most direct health benefits, but ALA can only form them slowly and in small amounts, so it is also important to include foods in our diet that contain EPA and DHA, such as oily fish. It is thought that EPA and DHA can protect the heart as those whose diets contain a lot of oily fish are less likely to have heart disease compared with those who don’t.

What is Vitamin D?

There are 2 main types of vitamin D. Vitamin D3 (known as colcalciferol) is the biologically active form of vitamin D which is produced by the body when it converts cholesterol when our skin is exposed to the sun. Vitamin D2 is created by plants when they are exposed to sunlight. We can also receive small amounts of vitamin D by consuming certain foods, such as:

  • Red meat
  • Liver
  • Egg Yolks
