Frequently Asked Questions

Will acrivastine make me drowsy?

Acrivastine is a type of non-drowsy antihistamine, meaning it’s less likely to make you drowsy than some other antihistamines. However, if you find that acrivastine does make you drowsy, you shouldn’t drive or use heavy machinery until your tiredness passes.

What are the side effects of acrivastine?

Like all medicines, acrivastine can cause side effects in some people, but these won't affect everyone. Common side effects of acrivastine include drowsiness, dry mouth and dizziness, with these symptoms affecting around 1 in 10 people. Products that contain both acrivastine and pseudoephedrine can cause common side effects such as: trouble sleeping, nausea, headaches, nervousness, difficulty peeing (for men), especially those with an enlarged prostate.

Is there a generic version of acrivastine available?

No, there is no generic version of acrivastine available yet. Currently, Benadryl is the only brand to sell acrivastine.

How do antihistamines work?

Antihistamines work by blocking the production of a hormone called histamine in your body.

Histamine is produced when you come into contact with something your body is allergic to, like pollen, dust, or pet dander.

It then causes symptoms designed to remove the allergen from your system, like sneezing, a runny nose, watery eyes, and itching.

By blocking histamine, antihistamines help to prevent allergy symptoms by going right to their source.
