What is J.Collis Brownes Mixture?
J. Collis Browne’s Mixture relieves coughs and the symptoms of diarrhoea. The medicine contains morphine which helps calm and reduces the effects of diarrhoea and griping pains. It also contains peppermint oil which calms the stomach and relieves flatulence and griping. If you have diarrhoea, it is also important to drink plenty of fluids to avoid becoming dehydrated.
The active ingredients per 5ml are: morphine hydrochloride equivalent to 1.0mg anhydrous morphine, peppermint oil 1.5 microlitres
How should J.Collis Brownes Mixture be used?
This product is designed to combat diarrhoea and is also associated with stomach upsets and coughs. A traditional medicine made by ex-army officer John Collis Browne, who was the inventor of items for yachts and the originator of the medicine Chlorodyne. A well-respected medicine containing morphine which targets diarrhoea and stomach upsets. To use this medicine affectively, shake the bottle (it may be taken alone or with water).
When should J.Collis Brownes Mixture be used?
For diarrhoea, adults, the elderly and children over 12 years old should take two or three 5ml spoonful’s. (10-15ml) every 4 hours up to a maximum of three doses. For coughs, adults, the elderly and children over 12 years should take one or two 5ml spoonful’s (5-10ml) every 4 hours. Elderly and debilitated patients are recommended to ask their doctor for advice, as a lower dose might be more suitable.
When should J.Collis Brownes Mixture not be used?
Do not use the medicine if you or your child have, an allergy to any of the ingredients, shallow breath or breathing difficulties, a head injury or persistent headache, asthma, taken MAOIs (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors) for depression within the last two weeks, a blocked intestine or inflammation of your colon or rectum, an addiction to alcohol or if your child is under the age of 6.
Do I need a prescription to order J.Collis Brownes Mixture?
No, a prescription is not required when ordering J.Collis Brownes Mixture. While other medicines containing morphine may require a prescription, controlled use of this medicine does not and can be bought over the counter. You have to be 18 years or older to order this medicine.
Can I use J.Collis Brownes Mixture if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
It is recommended that you do not take J.Collis Brownes Mixture when you are pregnant if you need any other information you should contact your GP, Doctor or health visitor.
