What is Woodward’s Gripe Water?
Woodward’s Gripe Water is a remedy for infants who have colic. This treatment eases their indigestion and helps them to pass trapped wind, which may relieve their colic. If your baby is crying a lot with no obvious cause, then Woodward’s Gripe Water could help to make them feel better and help you both to relax.
What is colic?
Colic is a common condition that many young children suffer with, and although it can be distressing for baby and their parents, there usually isn’t any reason to worry. When your baby has colic, you’ll notice that they may cry for more than 3 hours a day, for at least 3 days a week, with no obvious reason for their tears. Babies with colic may be harder to settle and may bring their knees up to their tummy or arch their back when they cry. The exact cause of colic is not currently known, but many believe that some babies can struggle to digest their food, causing indigestion and trapped wind. The pain and discomfort of trapped wind could be what makes your baby cry so much when they’re colicky.
How does Woodward’s Gripe Water help to relieve colic?
Woodward’s Gripe Water contains two active ingredients that work together to relieve the trapped wind and abdominal pain which may cause colic. It works as both an antacid and an anti-flatulent, helping your baby to pass any trapped wind, easing their pain, bloating, and discomfort. Easing this pain could ease their colic and keep them from crying as often, making both you and baby feel calmer and more comfortable.
Can anyone take this product?
Woodward's Gripe Water is only suitable for babies who are younger than a year old. If you or your child are older than this and are suffering with trapped wind, speak to your doctor or pharmacist so they can recommend a more suitable product for your age.
How to use this product
Measure out the right amount of Woodward’s Gripe Water for your child and use a medicine syringe or spoon to give them their medication. The amount of medicine you should give is:
- Babies aged 1 – 6 months: one 5ml spoonful
- Babies aged 6 – 12 months: two 5ml spoonfuls
Give your baby this product after every feed. Do not give more than 6 doses in any 24-hour period.
When should this product not be used?
Woodward’s Gripe Water is not suitable for those who are older than 12 months. Do not give this product to your baby if they are allergic to terpeneless dill seed oil, sodium hydrogen carbonate, or any of the other listed ingredients. Do not give this product to your baby if they have kidney problems. Although this product is sugar free, it does contain maltitol, which can affect sugar levels. If your baby has an inherited intolerance to some sugars, speak to your doctor before giving them this product.
Does Woodward’s Gripe Water have any side effects?
There currently aren’t any known side effects of Woodward’s Gripe Water. However, every medication can cause side effects, so if your child experiences any side effects after using this product, stop use and speak to your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible. How to store this product
Store in a cool, dry place which is below 25 degrees C. Do not use if the expiry date printed on the original packaging has passed. Once opened, use within 14 days. Keep out of sight and reach of children.
