Tamiflu is an antiviral treatment for influenza (flu), containing the active ingredient oseltamivir, suitable for use when you have flu symptoms and the flu virus is known to be spreading in your community. Tamiflu can sometimes be prescribed to prevent flu in certain circumstances, for example, if you have been in contact with someone who has flu.
How Tamiflu treats flu
The active ingredient in Tamiflu is oseltamivir, a type of medicine classed as a neuraminidase inhibitor. It works by attacking the flu virus, stopping it from multiplying and spreading through your body. This means flu symptoms such as runny nose, cough, headache and fever can be prevented or reduced.
You should try to take Tamiflu as soon as possible, ideally within two days of flu symptoms starting. To treat flu, you should usually take two doses daily, one in the morning and one in the evening. You must complete a full 5-day course, even if you start to feel better quickly. If you have a weak immune system, you may need a 10 day course. To prevent flu after being exposed to an infected person, take one dose daily for 10 days - for best results, take this in the morning with breakfast.
The recommended dose will be based on your bodyweight - your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist will advise you further. For guidance on dosage, refer to the patient information leaflet.
Like all medicines, Tamiflu can cause some side effects. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of the following serious side effects:
- Severe allergic reaction: swelling of the face, itchy rash, difficulty breathing or low blood pressure
- Hepatic disorders: yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes, change in stool colour, changes in behaviour
- Angioneurotic oedema: sudden onset of severe swelling of the skin, mainly around the head and neck area, including eyes and tongue, with difficulty breathing
- Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis: severe inflammation of the outer and possibly inner skin initially with fever, sore throat, fatigue, skin rashes leading to blisters, peeling, shedding of larger areas of skin and possible breathing difficulties
- Gastrointestinal bleeding: prolonged bleeding from the large bowel or spitting up blood
- Neuropsychiatric disorders: convulsions and delirium, altered level of consciousness, confusion, abnormal behaviour, delusions, hallucinations, agitation, anxiety and nightmares
Common, less severe side effects may include:
- Cold sore virus
- Runny nose
- Sleeping difficulties
- Sore throat
- Stomach ache
- Upper abdominal fullness
- Upper respiratory tract infections (inflammation of the nose, throat and sinuses)
- Feeling or being sick
For more information on possible uncommon, rare or very rare side effects, refer to the patient information leaflet. If you experience any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
