What types of skin conditions cause dry skin?

Dry skin can be caused by a variety of factors including dry air, temperatures that are too hot or cold and exposing the skin to heat for long periods of time. Dry skin can also be caused by a variety of skin conditions, which need to be managed long-term in order to keep the skin feeling comfortable.

Atopic Eczema

Atopic eczema causes the skin to become itchy, dry, red and cracked which can make you feel uncomfortable and irritated. It’s a long-term skin condition for most people, although it is possible for it to improve over time and if it develops in childhood, children often grow out of it. Eczema can affect every part of the body, but it most commonly affects the backs and fronts of the knees, insides and outsides of elbows and around the neck, hands, cheeks and scalp. The severity of this skin condition varies from person to person but in general if the skin isn’t treated, it can be uncomfortable and disruptive.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis causes patches of red skin covered in silver scales to form on the elbows, knees and the lower back. The patches can be itchy or sore and, similar to eczema, can differ in severity, with some people suffering with just minor irritation and others experiencing severe discomfort that can have an impact on their quality of life. People who have psoriasis may experience periods with either mild or no symptoms followed by periods where symptoms are severe.

Pruritus

Also known as itchy skin, pruritus is a common skin condition in older adults, as skin tends to lose moisture and become more dry as we age. Pruritus can cause the skin to become red with small bumps, spots or blisters. It can also cause the skin to become dry and cracked with scales or have a leathery texture.
