What are Preconceive Folic Acid tablets?

Preconceive Folic Acid tablets are daily food supplements which help to support you as you try to conceive a baby and during your pregnancy. Each daily tablet contains all of the folic acid you need to take during the early stages of your pregnancy.

Why do I need to take folic acid during pregnancy?

Folic acid should be taken before and during pregnancy because it helps to support the development of a healthy foetus and reduce the chances of neural tube defects, or NTDs. Types of NTDs include:

  • Spina bifida

  • Anencephaly

  • Encephalocele

  • Iniencephaly

How much folic acid is in these tablets?

Preconceive tablets contain 400µg, which is 400 micrograms or mcg. This is the daily amount of folic acid that the NHS recommends should be taken in a supplement before you conceive a child and during the first 12 weeks of your pregnancy.

Can I take this product if I’m taking other medication?

If you are taking any other medication, including those which don’t require a prescription,  you should speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before taking this product. This includes:

  • Medicines which treat epilepsy, e.g. phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone. Folic acid can affect the way these medications work in your body

How to take Preconceive Folic Acid tablets

Swallow one Preconceive tablet every day. Take with a sip of water or with food. For best results, take at the same time every day. Do not take more than the recommended daily dose.

When should Preconceive Folic Acid tablets not be used?

Preconceive Folic Acid tablets are not suitable for use by children. Do not take this product if you are allergic to any of the listed ingredients. Food supplements should not be used in place of a balanced diet or healthy lifestyle. Speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before taking this product if you are taking other medication or have an underlying health condition. Do not use these tablets if:

  • You have a folate dependant tumour (cancer affected by folic acid intake)

  • You are suffering from epilepsy, unless specifically advised otherwise by your doctor

  • You wish to treat Addisonian pernicious anaemia or other vitamin B12 deficiency states, unless specifically advised otherwise by your doctor

Does this product have any side effects?

Like all medication, Preconceive Folic Acid can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. You may experience morning sickness throughout the first few weeks of your pregnancy, this usually is not caused by folic acid. If you experience any side effects while taking this product, speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting the side effects of medication, please see the MHRA’s Yellow Card Scheme.
