What is keratosis piliaris?
Keratosis piliaris is a common skin condition that causes small bumps to appear on the skin. It is a harmless condition, but it may last for a long time. You will usually experience patches of small bumps on your arms, thighs or bottom, but it is possible for patches to appear elsewhere on the body. The bumps can be red, white, skin-toned or darker than your skin tone and they can sometimes feel itchy.
How to treat keratosis piliaris
It is common for those with keratosis piliaris to experience it for years, but it may eventually clear up on its own. There are steps you can take to improve the appearance of the condition including:
- Moisturise regularly
- Use soaps that are unperfumed
- Gently rub the skin with a flannel or exfoliating cloth
- Do not bathe in hot water
- Do not rub your skin with a towel after bathing - pat it gently
- Avoid the use of harsh scrubs or exfoliants that contain rough particles
- Do not scratch, pick or rub your skin
