Can a pharmacist help with my condition?

A pharmacist can help with a range of short-term medical conditions, without having to wait for an appointment or prescription from your GP.

Some of the most common ailments that a pharmacist can help you with are minor aches and pains, allergies, insect bites, cold & flu, indigestion, thrush, earache and more.

There are plenty of medicines available to treat conditions like these, but always seek advice if you’re not sure.

If you suspect you’re suffering with something more serious, like diabetes, hypertension, asthma, or cardiac problems for example, you should see your GP for an expert diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Gaviscon help with gas?

Whilst heartburn and gas can happen at the same time, especially after a big meal, they’re usually separate problems that need to be treated separately.

Gaviscon works specifically to relieve the symptoms of heartburn and indigestion, so probably won’t help with excess gas.

If you’re feeling gassy, the best medicine to try is simeticone, which works by bringing together the small gas bubbles in your gut to form bigger bubbles that can pass through your body more easily.

How do thrush tablets work?

Vaginal thrush is a very common problem amongst women, and the most effective way to treat the condition is with fluconazole.

Fluconazole works by killing the fungus (or yeast) causing the infection.

It does this by making holes in its cell membrane so the contents leak out, treating the infection and allowing your symptoms to improve.

What is Macrogol?

Macrogol is a type of medicine known as a laxative, used to treat constipation by making your stools slightly bigger and softer.

It can also be given before a colonoscopy (a test to check inside your bowels) to empty your bowels prior to the test.

Macrogol generally comes in sachets of powder that you mix with water and can take 1 or 2 days to work.

Can you use thrush tablets and cream at once?

When you’ve got thrush, you’ll need to treat the infection with fluconazole, but how do you relieve the itching and discomfort?

Alongside fluconazole, you can use an external cream called clotrimazole to soothe your symptoms while the infection is clearing up.

There are also vaginal pessaries, soft gel pessaries and internal creams that can be used to relieve the symptoms of thrush.

Can you buy minoxidil online?

Minoxidil is a topical medication that works to treat male and female pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia).

It works by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles, stimulating hair growth in the area in which it is applied.

You don’t need a prescription to buy minoxidil - just look out for brands like Regaine and Son’s.

What are the best migraine treatments?

Migraines are a common problem, and while there isn’t a cure, there are several treatments available to help ease the symptoms.

Firstly, you should try regular painkillers like paracetamol, aspirin and ibuprofen to see if they can relieve your symptoms.

If these aren’t helping, a type of medicine called triptans are formulated specifically for migraine headaches.
