What is Care Ephedrine Nasal Drops 0.5%?

The nasal drops are a treatment for relieving nasal congestion that has been caused by a cold or the flu. The active ingredient in these nasal drops is ephedrine hydrochloride. Ephedrine is a decongestant which works by reducing the blockage in the nose that is causing a blocked or stuffy nose. This works by thinning the blood vessels in the nose that have expanded because of the infection.

What causes a cold or the flu?

Both a cold and the flu are infections that cause a number of different symptoms. These include:

  • A cough
  • Headaches
  • Blocked or stuffy nose
  • Sneezing
  • Aches and pains

The difference between a cold or the flu is the severity of the symptoms and that cold symptom takes longer to become their worst. This means that if treated early enough, a cold can be treated quicker. Both infections are contagious and are spread through germs, either in the air through sneezing or on germs left on surfaces by touching. Germs can live on surfaces for up to 24 hours.

Who are the ephedrine drops suitable for?

These nasal drops can be used by children and adults aged 12 and over. Anyone who is allergic to ephedrine or any other ingredient contained in the drops should not use them. These nasal drops should also not be used if you have or had any of the following:

  • Antidepressants are known as Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
  • Taken beta-blockers for blood pressure
  • A heart condition
  • High blood pressure
  • Poor blood circulation
  • Glaucoma
  • Excessive levels of adrenaline in the blood
  • Recently had surgery on the nose or sinuses

If you are already taking medication to treat your nose and sinuses, or any medication for another condition, then you should speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using these nasal drops.

Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use these nasal drops?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, then you should speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist for advice on what treatment to use for nasal congestion.

How should Care Ephedrine Nasal Drops 0.5% be used?

Avoid touching the glass dropper and do not place it inside the nostril. Instead, tilt your head back and use the dropper in each dropper. Put the dropper back into the bottle after use. Don’t share with anyone else when using. Use one or two drops in each nostril up to four times a day as needed. Do not use for more than seven days or a higher dose unless told to do so by a doctor.

Are there any side effects?

Like with many types of medicine, there is a chance of side effects. Potential side effects include:

  • Anxiety
  • Sleeping difficulties
  • Hallucinations
  • A headache
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Irritation on the nose
  • Sweating
  • Heart palpitations
  • High or low blood pressure

If you notice any side effect, then stop using the nasal drops and speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist as soon as possible. You can also record a side effect using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.

Good but monitor use, don't use too much very important to follow guidelines. If not you can get a rebound effect which can make you worse. I've used these annually for a while now for ETD blockage.
