What are Strepsils Sore Throat & Cough Lozenges?

Strepsils Sore Throat & Cough Lozenges are a form of treatment that works to provide relief for the effects of a sore throat and a cough. These lozenges work thanks to the active ingredients that are contained in them. Two of the active ingredients are antiseptics that help to kill bacteria in the mouth. These ingredients are:

  • 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol
  • Amylmetacresol

There is another active ingredient that is not an antiseptic but instead is a decongestant that helps to reduce swelling in the nose and also make breathing easier.

What causes a sore throat and a cough?

Both the symptoms, a sore throat and a cough, are generally caused by an infection, such as a cold or the flu. They can be caused by an allergy as well. A sore throat and a cough will likely to be caused by germs getting into the mouth by someone coughing or sneezing and the germs getting into the air. Germs can also spread by touching surfaces with the hands. Germs on surfaces can last for up to 24 hours.

Who are these Strepsils lozenges suitable for?

These Strepsils lozenges are suitable to be used by adults and children aged 6 and over. Anyone who is allergic to the ingredients contained in the lozenges should not use them. These lozenges should also not be used if you are intolerant to certain sugars, such as sucrose, fructose, and glucose. If you are using medication for any other condition, speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using.

Can someone who is pregnant use these lozenges?

Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding should speak to a medical professional before using these lozenges.

How should Strepsils Sore Throat & Cough Lozenges be used?

Place one lozenge in the mouth and let it dissolve slowly. Use a lozenge every 2-3 hours, but only use a maximum of 12 lozenges in a 24-hour period. If symptoms have not improved after 3 days of use, consult a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist for advice.

Are there any side effects?

There is a small chance of side effects. Potential side effects include:

  • Itching
  • Burning in the mouth
  • Discomfort in the mouth

If you notice any side effect, stop using and speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist as soon as possible. You can also record any side effect that you notice using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
