What is Nicotinell Mint 2mg Medicated Chewing Gum?

Nicotinell Mint Gum is a treatment that is designed to help people quit smoking. The active ingredient of the gum is nicotine, the same that is contained in cigarettes. The difference is that this gum does not contain the other harmful ingredients that a cigarette does. This gum is what is called Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT). NRT is used to help someone to quit smoking. This gum can also be used as a cigarette replacement when having one is not possible.

What causes nicotine addiction?

Nicotine addiction is the result of smoking cigarettes and the tobacco getting into the body and the nicotine in the tobacco getting into the brain. When the nicotine gets into the lungs, it goes into the brain quickly, where the brain then releases a neurotransmitter as a result. A neurotransmitter is something released by the brain that controls mood and behaviour. The neurotransmitter that is released because of nicotine is dopamine. Dopamine improves the mood and emits the feeling of pleasure. Nicotine addiction can create triggers that produce cravings. These include actions that will act as triggers. Knowing what these triggers are can help when it comes to quitting smoking.

Who is this Nicotinell gum suitable for?

This gum is suitable to be used by adults and children aged 12 and over. It should not be used by anyone who is allergic to the ingredients contained in the gum. If any of the following applies to you, speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using:

  • Have heart disease
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Have recently had a stroke
  • Have serious kidney or liver disease
  • Have or in the past had a stomach ulcer
  • Have persistent indigestion
  • Are diabetic
  • Have an overactive thyroid
  • Have a tumour on the adrenal glands
  • Are fructose intolerant
  • Are on a low-sodium diet

You should also speak to someone before using if you are using any other medication.

Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use this gum?

This gum can be used by someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding. However, it is recommended that anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding who is looking to quit smoking does so without any form of NRT. If this is not successful, then consult a medical professional before using this gum, or any other form of NRT.

How should Nicotinell Mint 2mg Medicated Chewing Gum be used?

Unlike regular chewing gum, where it is chewed until the taste is gone, the method for chewing this gum is different. Use a single piece of gum and place it into the mouth. Chew until the taste has become stronger and then stop chewing. Place the gum in between the cheek and the gum lining in the mouth. Leave it there until the taste fades and then chew for 30 minutes and then dispose of the cum carefully. Use a maximum of 25 pieces of gum a day, and do not use this treatment for longer than 3 months unless told to do so by a doctor. If you smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day, then do not use this gum and use a 4mg treatment instead.

Are there any side effects?

Like with many different types of medicine, there is a chance of side effects. Potential side effects include:

  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Swelling in the face
  • Severe itching of the skin
  • Dizziness and headaches
  • Stomach pains
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Heartburn
  • Red skin rash
  • Irregular heartbeat rhythm

If you notice any side effect, stop using this gum and speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist as soon as possible. You can also record any side effect that you notice using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
