What is Hirudoid Gel?
Hirudoid Gel is a treatment that is intended to be used for relieving pain and inflammation of the veins, as well as bruising. The active ingredient in the gel is heparinoid, which is an anticoagulant that will reduce the effects of a blood clot.
What causes a blood clot?
A blood clot, also known as phlebitis, is a condition that occurs to stop bleeding. When bruised on the skin, a blood clot could occur to stop blood flowing to the wound. A blood clot can cause a condition known as superficial thrombophlebitis is when the vein near the surface of the skin has become inflamed because of a blood clot. A blood clot is most likely caused by an injury but can also be caused by:
- Obesity
- Smoking
- Pregnancy
- A stroke
- Surgery
- Contraceptives
- Hormone Replacement Therapy
- Cancer
In most cases, a blood clot will not be serious.
Who is this gel suitable for?
This gel is suitable to be used by adults and children aged 5 and over. It should not be used by anyone who is allergic to the ingredients contained in the gel. It should not be used on large areas of skin, on broken skin, or areas such as the mouth, eyes, anal or genital regions. If you are currently using any other form of medication, then speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using.
Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use this Hirudoid Gel?
Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding should consult a medical professional for advice before using.
How should Hirudoid Gel be used?
When it comes to using this gel, the amount you will need to use will be dependent on the area of skin that you are treating. The recommended amount is between 5-15ml and applies as a thin layer over the affected skin. If the area is tender, then the gel can be applied around the area. Use the gel up to four times a day. Wash the hands after applying the gel, unless it is the hands that are being treated. Apply the gel up to four times a day.
Are there any side effects?
In rare cases, using Hirudoid Gel can cause a rash when applying onto sensitive skin. If you notice a side effect when using the gel, stop using and speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist as soon as possible. You can also record any side effect that you notice using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
Why do I need to answer questions to buy this product?
You do not need a prescription for Hirudoid Gel, however, you will be asked to complete a short medical questionnaire by your Chemist 4 U pharmacist before we can take your order. This includes some simple questions that all pharmacies legally are required to ask before supplying this kind of product. This helps our pharmacy team to be sure that Hirudoid Gel is the best choice for you.
