What are Pollenase Hayfever Relief Eye Drops?

Pollenase Hayfever Relief Eye Drops are designed to relieve the discomfort of red, itchy and watery eyes caused by seasonal allergic rhinitis (hayfever). The active ingredient in these eye drops is sodium cromoglicate, a type of medicine known as an anti-allergic which works to reduce the inflammation caused by an allergic reaction.

How to use these eye drops

Always take Pollenase Hayfever Relief Eye Drops exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you. Adults and children aged 6 and over should administer one or two drops into each eye four times a day. Always wash your hands before using these eye drops.

To use eye drops effectively, tilt your head back slightly and hold the bottle upside down near to your eye without letting it touch your eye. Release a drop inside your lower lid and close your eye for a minute or two. It may help to press gently on the side of your nose where the corner of your eye meets your nose, as this will prevent the drops from draining out through the nostril.

How does sodium cromoglicate relieve itchy eyes?

The active ingredient in Pollenase Hayfever Relief Eye Drops is sodium cromoglicate, a type of medicine called an anti-allergic. It works by stopping your eyes from releasing chemicals that are naturally produced during an allergic reaction. Inhibiting the release of these chemicals will prevent inflammation and therefore relieve any redness or itchiness.

Why does hayfever cause itchy eyes?

Hayfever is a common condition that affects up to 30% of all adults according to Allergy UK. When a hayfever sufferer comes into contact with pollen, the body releases a chemical called histamine that causes swelling and inflammation. The blood vessels in the eyes will swell as a result, leaving them feeling itchy and watery.

Are these eye drops suitable for children?

Pollenase Hayfever Relief Eye Drops are not suitable for children under 6 years old. Speak to a Chemist4U pharmacist or browse our Hayfever & Allergy category for suitable alternatives for your child.

Are these eye drops suitable for pregnant and breastfeeding women?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist for advice before taking any new medicine.

Are these eye drops suitable for contact lens wearers?

Pollenase Hayfever Relief Eye Drops contain benzalkonium chloride which is known to discolour soft contact lenses and may cause eye irritation. You should remove all types of contact lenses before administering these eye drops and wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back in.

When should this product not be used?

Pollenase Hayfever Relief Eye Drops may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not take these eye drops if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or if your allergic eye symptoms are caused by something other than hayfever. Talk to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist before taking this medicine if:

  • You aren't completely sure that your symptoms are caused by hayfever

  • You are using any other eye drops or eye treatments

  • You are taking any other medicines or herbal remedies, including those obtained without a prescription

Are there any side effects?

Like all medicines, Pollenase Hayfever Relief Eye Drops may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Seek emergency medical attention if the itching, redness or swelling in your eyes becomes worse, as you may be having an allergic reaction. Talk to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist if any of the following side effects become serious or last longer than a few days:

  • Stinging or burning in your eyes

  • Blurred vision

  • Mild eye irritation

If you experience any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
