What are Optrex Bloodshot Eye Drops?

Optrex Bloodshot Eye drops help to temporarily remove redness of the eye caused by minor eye irritation. The effective formula works by helping to restore the normal flow of blood to remove redness. The drops are easy to apply and are suitable for adults and children over the age of 12. Why causes bloodshot eyes?’

Bloodshot eyes is a common and usually harmless condition, which occurs when the blood vessels on the surface of your eyes burst which causes the whites of the eyes to appear pink or red. If your eyes are bloodshot, you may experience:

  • Irritation within the eyes
  • Burning sensation
  • Itchiness
  • Eyes feeling dry
  • Pain that can be either mild or severe
  • Discharge or watery eyes
  • Blurred vision 
  • Light sensitivity

There are many factors that can cause the eyes to become bloodshot including:

  • Lack of sleep
  • Scratches on the eye
  • Excessive time staring at screen
  • Eye strain
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol
  • Spending time in dusty or smoky environments
  • Swimming in chlorinated pools

How can Optrex help to relieve bloodshot eyes?

Optrex for bloodshot eyes has mildly astringent properties which help to temporarily remove redness in the eyes caused by minor irritation. The effective formula helps to restore the normal flow of blood which reduces the appearance of bloodshot eyes. Optrex is presented in drop form for easy administration.

How to use this product

Only use this product as described in the patient information leaflet. Ensure the seal is not broken before first use. Wash and dry the hands thoroughly before use. Remove the plastic cap from the eye drop tip. Tilt your head back whilst seated or lie down on your back. Gently pull the lower eyelid downwards and look up. Place the tip of bottle close (but not on) the surface of the eye. Squeeze the bottle and let one drop fall into the space between the eyelid and the eye. Ensure that the tip of the bottle does not touch the eye, the skin around the eye or your fingers. Close your eye for a moment. Repeat in the other eye if required. 


The recommended dose is 1 - 2 drops into each eye. Repeat as necessary, but do not use more than 4 times in 24 hours. 


Do NOT breathe on or touch the dropper nozzle and do NOT share the product with any other person. This product is for external use only. Continued use may increase redness of the eye. Do NOT use the medicine if it changes colour or becomes cloudy. Avoid contact with soft contact lenses. Remove contact lenses prior to application and wait at least 15 minutes before wearing contact lenses after using this product. 

When NOT to use this product

Do NOT use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients (see ingredients tab for full list). This product is not suitable for children under the age of 12. Do NOT use this product if you have glaucoma, other eye diseases or have had eye surgery or if you:

  • Have high blood pressure
  • Depression
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid disorders 

Speak to your doctor BEFORE using this product if you are pregnant. 

Can this product be taken with other medicines?

If you are taking other medicines, seek advice from your doctor BEFORE using this medicine, especially if you:

  • Are taking digoxin, quinidine or tricyclic antidepressants
  • Have taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) within the last 14 days
  • Are taking antihypertensive medication
  • Are using any other eye treatments

Can this product cause side effects?

There may be initial discomfort when using this product which will usually quickly disappear. Stop using the product immediately and seek advice from your doctor if you:

  • Have eye pain or changes in vision
  • Have used too many drops or used them too often which causes stinging or irritation 
  • Have increased redness or no improvement after 24 hours
  • Are concerned about the effects of the drops
