What are head lice and nits?

Head lice are tiny, flightless insects that can live in human hair and feed on blood from the scalp. The main symptoms caused by a head lice infestation is an itchy and uncomfortable scalp and due to their tiny, they can be tricky to spot until there are quite a few living in the hair. Although, they can be irritating, they do not pose a serious problem and can usually be treated easily. Head lice and nits are a common problem, especially for young children and their families, as they are easily spread through head to head contact. Adult head lice typically grow to around 3mm in length and a typical infestation can contain anything between 30 and 1000 head lice, depending on how severe the infestation is. Head lice multiply through laying eggs and attaching them to the hair with a glue-like substance, which females excrete as they lay their eggs. Head lice eggs can hatch within 7 days and leave behind the empty white egg cases, which are known as nits. If you see nits in your hair, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you still have an active head lice infestation, as the empty egg cases can remain stuck in your hair after the lice have been removed.

How do head lice spread?

Head lice can’t jump, fly or swim, so they only way they can spread from person to person is through direct contact with someone with head lice. It can take only 30 seconds for a head louse to crawl from one head to another. You are extremely unlikely to catch head lice through sharing things like hats, brushes or pillows, as head lice cannot survive for very long once they have been removed from the head, as they no longer have a food source.

How can Lyclear Spray treat head lice?

The active ingredients in Lyclear Spray are mineral oil and dimethicone which suffocate and dehydrate head lice and their eggs. Lyclear doesn’t use traditional insecticides to kill lice, which prevents them from becoming resistant to treatment. The caring spray formula is simple to apply and rinse, as well as being easy to comb through the hair.

What is Dimethicone?

Dimethicone is a very safe and effective ingredient for treating head lice. It works by suffocating the lice and dehydrating them by preventing their ability to regulate water, resulting in death. Dimethicone has become a popular ingredient in lice removal products as they avoid pesticide exposure and prevent the lice from becoming resistant to treatment.

How to use this product

Removing head lice with Lyclear Spray is simple and can be achieved in just 6 easy steps.

Check the hair for lice

Brush the hair to remove any tangles and methodically check the hair, lock by lock, for head lice using the included . Pay special attention to hair roots, behind the ears and on the nape of the neck as this is where head lice and their eggs can be commonly found. After each stroke with the comb, clean it using tepid, soapy water to avoid further infestation.

Apply the product

Hold the spray around 10 cm from the hair and spray a sufficient quantity of the product evenly onto dry hair. Ensure that all the hair and scalp is covered. Massage the scalp and hair from root to tips, again paying special attention to the neck and the area behind the ears. Leave the spray on the hair for 15 minutes.

Wash the hair

Apply normal shampoo to the hair and wash normally. Ensure you rinse the hair thoroughly to remove the product. Shampoo again, if necessary.

Remove the lice and eggs.

Use the included comb to remove the head lice and eggs. Divide the hair into 4 sections – from the forehead to the nape of the neck, then from one ear to the other. Treat each section by isolating small amounts of hair to the head is visible. Comb each lock of hair, starting as close as possible to the head. Using the comb, remove each egg that is found. If there are no eggs found in the lock of hair, it can be put to one side. In order to avoid re-infestation, clean the comb after each lock of hair and always comb the hear from the top of the head to the tips.

Repeat the treatment a week later

Repeat the treatment 7 days after the initial treatment. This will ensure that the lice’s life cycle is completely broken and any eggs that could have hatched since the first treatment can also be removed. Head lice cannot become resistant to Lyclear Spray, as it doesn’t contain a pesticide. Treating lice infestations with Lyclear repeatedly has no risk, so if another infestation is caught from an untreated person, you can safely repeat this process as necessary.
