What are head lice and nits?
Head lice are tiny insects that can live in human hair and feed on the blood from the scalp. If you catch head lice, they make your scalp itchy and uncomfortable and due to their tiny size, they can be difficult to spot, until there are quite a few in the hair. Although they can be irritating, they do not pose a serious problem and can be easily treated. Head lice and nits are a common problem, especially for young children and their families as they are easily spread through head to head contact. Adult head lice typically grow to around 3mm in size and a typical infestation can contain anything between 30 and 1000 head lice, depending on how severe the infestation is. Head lice multiply by laying eggs and attaching them to the hair with a glue-like substance, which females excrete as they lay their eggs. Head lice eggs can hatch within 7 days and leave behind the empty white egg cases which are known as nits. If you see nits in your hair, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you still have an active head lice infestation, as the empty egg cases can remain stuck in your hair after the lice have been removed.
How do head lice spread?
Head lice can’t jump, fly or swim, so the only way they can multiply is through direct head-to-head contact with a person who has an infestation. It can take only 30 seconds for a head louse to crawl from one head to another. You are extremely unlikely to catch head lice through sharing things like hats, brushes or pillows, as head lice cannot survive for very long once they have been removed from the head as they no longer have a food source.
What are super lice?
Super lice are head lice that have become resistant to traditional lice treatments that include pesticides, such as remedies that include permethrin. They genetically mutate, so their bodies are not affected by the pesticide chemical, thus they cannot be killed by it. Symptoms of super lice are exactly the same as head lice, except they will not be affected by traditional head lice treatment, so you will still have a live infestation even after using a treatment that contains pesticides. If you experience lice after using traditional treatments, you may have super lice, which will need to be treated with a non-pesticide treatment like Lyclear Extra Strong Spray.
How can Lyclear Extra Strong Spray treat head lice?
Lyclear Extra Strong Spray is a treatment that doesn’t use an insecticide to kill the head lice. This product works by suffocating the lice and their eggs and dehydrating them so they can be easily combed out of the hair. Lyclear contains LPF (lice protecting factor) which coats the hair to make it an inhospitable environment to head lice, so prevents reinfestation for up to 72 hours as any lice that you come into contact with will not find the hair pleasant and will therefore not travel or lay eggs in the hair. The caring formula doesn’t contain silicone so can be easily rinsed out and hair can be easily combed. Lyclear has been clinically proven to be up 100% effective against head lice, including super lice that have become resistant to pesticide-based treatments.
How to use this product
Removing head lice with this product can be easily achieved in 4 simple steps.
- Methodically check the hair, lock by lock, for head lice using the included anti-lice comb.
- Shake the bottle well, before use, apply a generous amount to dry hair and massage evenly through the hair, working from roots to tips. Ensure you have covered all the hair and scalp before massaging and pay particular attention to the neck and back of the ears – leave the treatment on the hair for 10 minutes.
- Apply a sufficient amount of good shampoo all over the hair before wetting it. Wet the hair and shampoo before rinsing thoroughly.
- Before drying the hair, comb thoroughly with the anti-lice comb to remove the lice and eggs – ensure you clean the comb regularly during combing.
Warnings
Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water. If irritation persists, seek medical attention. Keep this product out of reach of children. This product is suitable for EXTERNAL USE only.
