News of a head lice outbreak at school is the last thing any parent wants to hear when they’re waiting for pick up in the playground.

Kids are particularly susceptible to head lice and nits (head lice eggs), but how can you tell whether your child has picked up some creepy crawly friends at school?

Luckily, there are a few tell-tale signs you can look out for when head lice come to town:

- Itching - one of the most common symptoms. If your child is itching their scalp or says their scalp feels tickly or like it’s moving, check them for head lice ASAP
- Mood changes - Itchy, irritating lice are enough to make anyone feel annoyed and they can also cause anxiety in kids who are worried about their friends finding out that they have head lice
- They can’t sleep - Itching could be keeping your child up at night, which could make their mood even worse. Make sure to check their pillow for pepper-like dust which could indicate an infestation
- Seeing the lice themselves - If you take a good close look at your child’s hair, you might be able to notice head lice moving around in there. They’re about the size of a sesame seed when fully grown, and their eggs (nits) can look a lot like dandruff
