What is Differin gel?
Differin gel is a topical acne treatment containing adapalene. Adapalene is a type of retinoid that works by helping your skin renew itself, preventing pores from becoming blocked, and thereby reducing breakouts.
It’s derived from vitamin A and, unlike some older retinoids, is more stable and tends to be less irritating. This means Differin is suitable for long-term use under medical guidance.
What is Differin gel used for?
Differin gel is used to treat mild to moderate acne, including:
- blackheads
- whiteheads
- inflamed spots (papules and pustules)
Differin is often recommended when over-the-counter treatments haven’t worked well enough and can help you manage symptoms and reduce future breakouts.
How does Differin gel work?
Differin works by increasing the rate at which your skin cells renew. This helps prevent dead skin cells from building up and blocking your pores.
It also has anti-inflammatory effects to help calm redness and swelling associated with acne.
Instead of just treating visible spots, Differin targets the underlying causes of acne, helping reduce future breakouts as well as existing ones.
How long does Differin take to work?
You may start to notice improvements in your skin after 2-4 weeks, but it can take up to 8-12 weeks to see the full benefits.
It’s common for acne to appear worse at first (sometimes called ‘purging’) as your skin adjusts. This usually settles with continued use. However, it’s important to let a healthcare professional know if this persists.
Differin gel vs Differin cream
Differin is available as both a gel and a cream. Which one you choose depends on your type of skin:
- if your skin is oily or prone to clogged pore, you should choose Differin gel
- if your skin is dry or easily irritated, you should choose Differin cream
Both contain the same active ingredient (adapalene) and work in the same way.

How effective is Differin gel?
Differin is clinically proven to reduce acne lesions and prevent new breakouts when used consistently.
According to NICE’s clinical guidance, topical retinoids like adapalene are a first-line treatment for acne, particularly for comedonal acne (blackheads and whiteheads).
Consistency is key. Using Differin regularly over several weeks gives the best results.
Adapalene vs retinol
Although both are vitamin A derivatives, adapalene and retinol are not the same.
Adapalene is specifically designed to treat acne and is more effective for this purpose than cosmetic retinol products.

Where can you buy Differin gel?
Differin gel is a prescription-only medicine in the UK.
This means you’ll need a consultation with a healthcare professional before it can be supplied.
You may be able to request Differin through:
- online pharmacies like Chemist4U
- your GP or NHS dermatology services
- community pharmacies with prescribing services
If appropriate, your GP may prescribe Differin on the NHS, particularly for persistent or moderate acne.
How to use Differin gel
Differin is usually applied once daily in the evening. When you applying you should:
- Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat dry
- Apply a thin layer of gel to the affected area
- Avoid sensitive areas such as eyes, lips and nostrils
- Wash your hands after application
Tips for best results
- Use a moisturiser to reduce dryness.
- Apply sunscreen daily, as your skin may become more sensitive to sunlight.
- Avoid using harsh or irritating skincare products alongside Differin.
How long can you use Differin gel?
Differin can be used long-term if it is effective and well-tolerated.
Many people continue using it as a maintenance treatment to prevent acne from returning. Your healthcare provider may review your treatment after several months.

Alternative acne treatments
If adapalene-based treatments like Differin aren’t suitable for you, you could consider:
- benzoyl peroxide – reduces bacteria and inflammation
- azelaic acid – helps reduce redness and inflammation
- oral antibiotics (for moderate to severe acne)
Alongside treatment, you should also consider:
- implementing a gentle skincare routine
- using oil-free, non-comedogenic products
- regular cleansing and moisturising
- avoiding picking or squeezing spots
Lifestyle changes alone may not treat acne, but they can support medical treatment.
