How do Pepto-Bismol chewable tablets work?
Pepto-Bismol chewable tablets form a protective coating over the lower part of your food pipe, and in your stomach and gut. This helps protect them from stomach acid and eases feelings of pain and discomfort.
How long do they take to work?
Pepto-Bismol chewable tablets typically begin to work within 30 to 60 minutes.
How long do they last for?
If symptoms persist, you can have another dose after 30 to 60 minutes, with a maximum of eight doses in 24 hours.
You shouldn’t take any Pepto-Bismol product for more than two days in a row, as this will increase your risk of severe side effects.
How to take Pepto-Bismol chewable tablets
You can take Pepto-Bismol with or without food, by either chewing the tablets or letting them dissolve on your tongue. You should chew or dissolve two tablets (one dose) in your mouth.
If you're taking Pepto-Bismol for diarrhoea, make sure you drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.
Side effects of Pepto-Bismol
You’re unlikely to get any side effects if you follow the instructions for taking Pepto-Bismol. However, like all medicines, Pepto-Bismol can cause side effects in some people.
One common side effect is your stool and/or tongue turning black. This happens when bismuth (the active ingredient in this medicine) comes into contact with small amounts of sulphur in your saliva and digestive system. This is a harmless side effect and usually goes away within several days after you stop taking the medicine.
When to seek medical help
If your tongue or your stool is still black after you've stopped taking Pepto-Bismol for several days, speak to your doctor or a pharmacist.
Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a serious allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the lips, mouth, throat or tongue, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness.
When not to take Pepto-Bismol chewable tablets
Most adults and young people aged 16 years and over can take Pepto-Bismol, but there are times that it shouldn’t be used. For example, do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
To make sure this medicine is safe for you, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have:
- ever had an allergic reaction to bismuth subsalicylate or any of the other ingredients in Pepto-Bismol
- ever had an allergic reaction to aspirin or any other medicine
- diabetes
- gout
- a rare inherited condition called phenylketonuria where you cannot have aspartame
- have a blood clotting disorder
Storage information
For best results, the product should be stored at room temperature. It should not be exposed to temperatures above 40°C or below 0°C. It should be stored in the original packaging out of site and reach of children.
