How Long Does Wegovy Take to Work?

Whether you're taking the Wegovy injection or the Wegovy pill, your treatment starts working right away. That said, most people start noticing visible changes within the first 4-8 weeks.

How much weight you'll lose depends on your diet, calorie intake, exercise habits, metabolism, dose, and starting weight. For most people, significant weight loss starts after around 12 weeks of treatment, whichever form you're taking.

In this guide, we'll walk you through what to expect at each stage of treatment, what factors can affect your progress, and some tips to help you get the most out of your treatment.

Three key takeaways

  • Wegovy starts working to reduce your appetite and regulate hunger signals in your brain straight away, but you might not see visible weight loss until around week five.
  • Most people can expect to lose around 4% of their starting weight by weeks 5-8, as their dose increases.
  • Your prescriber can move you onto a maintenance dose once you've built up gradually, helping you keep your new weight and appetite under control long-term.

Woman feeling confident in her body, starting Wegovy

Wegovy injections vs. Wegovy pills: what's the difference?

Both contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide, and work in the same way. The injection is a once-weekly jab, while the pill is a once-daily tablet taken on an empty stomach.

Because the pill has to survive your stomach before it can be absorbed, it needs to be taken first thing in the morning, with just water, and with a 30-minute wait before you eat or drink anything else.

The injection doesn't have any of these restrictions and can be taken with or without food.

Both follow a similar pattern of building your dose up gradually each month, so your body has time to adjust, and any side effects stay manageable. Below, we've broken down what you can expect from each one.

Wegovy injection timeline: week by week

Here's what you can expect when taking the Wegovy injection over time:

Weeks 1-4: starting on 0.25mg

During your first month, your prescriber will start you on the initial 0.25mg dose, and you'll start to feel less hungry than normal. This is because Wegovy helps suppress hunger cues in the brain and helps you feel fuller for longer.

Building healthy habits

At this early stage, you're building new eating habits, and weight loss usually takes a little more time to show. This is a good point to start your Wegovy diet plan, cut back on calories, and try to move a bit more.

Possible 2% weight loss

In the first month, most people lose around 2% of their body weight. So, if you weigh 100kg, you're likely to lose around 2kg. These numbers on the scale might not be visible in the mirror just yet, and that's completely normal.

"Wegovy isn't a miracle drug, so you won't see instant results from the very first dose. But most people feel the difference in themselves and their reduced hunger and cravings straight away.

"It's been clinically proven to help you lose weight faster than diet and exercise alone, so stick with it. You're likely to start seeing real results after the first month or so."

Weeks 5-8: increasing your dose

From week five, your prescriber will most likely raise your dose to 0.5mg, as your body adjusts to the medication.

Seeing visible results

Weeks 5-8 are when you're more likely to start seeing visible results. You're far more likely to lose weight if you're also eating fewer calories and staying active. Wegovy isn't a miracle drug; it's designed to support a healthy lifestyle, not replace one.

Up to 4% weight loss

If you're eating a balanced, nutrient-rich diet and staying physically active, your weight loss can double to around 4% of your starting body weight.

Weeks 9-12: increasing to 1mg

If you're tolerating the medication well, your prescriber should increase your dose to 1mg from week nine.

Finding your routine

As your dose increases, and your healthy eating and exercise habits start to feel more natural, this is often when people really start to notice results.

Possible 6% weight loss

At this point, most people have lost around 6% of their starting body weight.

Week 12 and beyond

Increasing your dose further

From weeks 13-16, if you've been seeing good results and coping well with any Wegovy side effects, your prescriber will likely raise your dose to 1.7mg.

Well on your way

By now, you're getting results you can see in the mirror. Clothes feel looser, and you're feeling more confident in your routine.

Possible 8% weight loss

People at this stage typically see an average weight loss of 8% of their starting body weight.

Reaching your final dose and maintenance

After week 16, your prescriber may keep you on 1.7mg, raise you to 2.4mg from week 17, or from week 21, move you onto the maximum 7.2mg dose.

This is called your maintenance dose, and with the right medical supervision, it's possible to stay at this level indefinitely to help keep your weight under control.

Sticking with your programme

From here, it's all about keeping up your hard work. Weight loss isn't always a straight line, so you might have weeks where you lose less, or the scales don't move much at all. This is completely normal.

Lasting results

Some people continue to see more weight loss over longer periods on a maintenance dose. One long-term study found that some people taking Wegovy lost between 15 and 25% of their starting body weight over 65 weeks.

"Wegovy has been shown in clinical trials to be safe for long term use, so it's possible to stay on a maintenance dose indefinitely to keep hunger cues and cravings at bay.

"Talk to your prescriber about whether staying on a maintenance dose is right for you, and what dose would suit you best."

Wegovy pill timeline: dose by dose

The Wegovy pill was approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in June 2026 and became available in July 2026. It contains the same active ingredient as the injection, but it's taken daily rather than weekly.

Month one: 1.5mg once a day (days 1-30)

This is your starting dose, giving your body time to adjust to the medication. Like the injection, you'll likely notice reduced hunger and fewer cravings early on, even before the scales start to change much.

Month two: 4mg once a day (days 31-60)

Your prescriber will usually move you up to 4mg if you're tolerating the medication well. This is often when people start to notice more visible changes.

Month three: 9mg once a day (days 61-90)

By this stage, many people have settled into their daily routine of taking the tablet on an empty stomach each morning, and appetite control tends to feel more established.

Day 91 onwards: 25mg once a day (maintenance dose)

This is the highest licensed dose and the one used in most of the clinical trial data.

In the OASIS 4 trial, people taking this dose lost an average of around 17% of their starting weight over 64 weeks. A more recent analysis looked at early responders, meaning people who'd lost more than 10% of their starting weight by week 16, and found this group went on to lose 22% on average by the end of the trial.

Remember, you can stay on a lower dose for as long as you need to.

Switching between Wegovy injections and pills

If you're already on the Wegovy injection and want to switch to the pill, this is possible, but should only be done under clinical supervision. Your new dose will depend on which injection strength you're currently on.

Factors affecting how fast Wegovy works

Dosage

Higher doses can lead to quicker weight loss for a lot of people. But higher doses should always be taken under medical supervision, as they increase the chances of side effects.

That's why it's so important to stick to your Wegovy dosing schedule and let your body adjust gradually.

Diet

Getting your diet right is key to seeing results, whichever form of Wegovy you're on. Focus on nutrient-dense, unprocessed, whole foods, and keep an eye on portion sizes to help make sure you're burning more calories than you're taking in.

Eating plenty of protein and fibre helps too. These help you feel fuller for longer and can reduce side effects like constipation and low blood sugar.

Exercise

Staying active isn't just good for weight loss. It also helps reduce side effects like fatigue and boosts your overall health. Experts recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity a week.

That might sound like a lot, but you don't need to do it all in one go. Try breaking it into smaller chunks, like 30 minutes five times a week, and put your feet up over the weekend.

Mixing cardio with resistance training tends to work best. Cardio is great for your heart health, circulation, and blood pressure, while strength training helps protect your bone health and preserve muscle mass, both of which help you burn more calories over time. Just take it slow at first to avoid injury.

Metabolism and hormones

Both your metabolism and your hormones can influence how much weight you lose. Hormones that can affect weight loss include:

  • oestrogen
  • testosterone
  • cortisol
  • thyroid hormones
  • growth hormone

Things that can influence your metabolism and hormones include:

  • your biological sex
  • your age
  • genetics
  • your sleep schedule
  • your diet and exercise habits

Frequently asked questions about how Wegovy works

How can I tell if Wegovy is working?

If you're feeling less hungry than normal, that's already a sign it's working, even before you see any change on the scales.

After around four weeks, weight loss of up to 2% of your starting weight each month is a good sign that things are on track.

Does Wegovy work for everyone?

No medication works for absolutely everyone, but Wegovy has been shown to help people lose an average of 21% of their starting weight on the injection, and 17% on the pill.

Cutting back on calories, eating well, and staying active will all give you the best chance of success.

Why isn't Wegovy working for me?

This could come down to needing a higher dose, hitting a temporary weight loss plateau, or needing to adjust your diet and exercise habits. Have a chat with your prescriber if you're not seeing the progress you'd hoped for.

Does Wegovy work straight away?

Yes. For most people, the hunger-suppressing effects start from the very first dose, whether you're taking the injection or the pill. As you naturally eat less, weight loss typically begins from weeks 2-4.

Do higher doses work better?

Generally, yes, for both the injection and the pill. Research shows that weight loss tends to increase at higher doses, though this varies from person to person.

It's important to remember that not everyone needs the highest dose to achieve meaningful weight loss results.

Does Wegovy work without exercise?

You can still lose weight without exercising, as long as you're managing your calorie intake.

However, if you lose a lot of weight in a short time period, you're more likely to experience loose skin.

Exercise, specifically strength training, helps prevent the appearance of loose skin during Wegovy-related weight loss by preserving and building muscle, helping maintain body shape and supporting skin elasticity.

Strength training is the best exercise for this, ideally combined with some cardio and enough protein intake.

How fast can I lose 20lbs on the Wegovy injection?

On the injection, most people reach around 8% weight loss by weeks 13-16. So, if you weigh 200lbs, it will likely take around 15-17 weeks to lose 20lbs (10% of your starting weight).

What should I expect in the second week of taking Wegovy?

In week two, your body may still be adjusting, and you might notice some mild side effects. You should be feeling less hungry and eating less by now, and you may have lost around 1% of your starting weight.

When do most people start losing weight on Wegovy?

On the injection, people typically lose around 2% of their body weight in the first four weeks, rising to around 4% by weeks 5-8 as the dose increases.

Meanwhile, on the pill, similar early changes in appetite are common, with more visible weight loss usually building over the following months as the dose increases.

How long does it take to notice first results?

For most people on the injection, weeks 5-8 are when visible results start to show. It's also a good idea to measure your waist size each month, as this can be a helpful early indicator that you're losing fat.

Can Wegovy work faster if I combine it with diet and exercise?

Yes, combining Wegovy with a healthy diet and regular exercise helps it work faster, whichever form you're taking. You're also more likely to keep the weight off long term if you build these habits alongside your treatment.

Will weight loss stop if I miss a dose of the injection?

No, missing a dose won't stop your weight loss, but it's best to take your injection at the same time on the same day each week, to help you stay consistent and avoid side effects.
