How to Switch From Weight Loss Injections to Wegovy Pills

If you're currently taking weight loss injections and wondering whether the Wegovy pill could be a better fit, you're not alone.

But before we get into it, there's one important thing to know: Wegovy pills aren't available in the UK quite yet. They were approved in the US in December 2025 and are expected to arrive here in 2026.

The information in this guide is based on US prescribing information, and any switch would need to be guided by a prescriber when the pills do become available. So, keep reading to learn everything we know so far.

Three key takeaways

  • Wegovy pills work in the same way as Wegovy injections as they contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide. The main difference is how you take them.
  • Switching treatments should always be done with your prescriber's guidance. Whether you're on Wegovy or Mounjaro injections, a healthcare professional needs to help you make the transition safely.
  • Pills aren't available in the UK yet, but they're expected to arrive in 2026.

Switching to Wegovy pills

How do Wegovy pills work?

Wegovy pills and Wegovy injections work in broadly the same way because both contain semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics a hormone your body naturally produces.

Semaglutide acts on receptors in the brain to:

  • increase feelings of fullness
  • reduce appetite
  • slow down how quickly food leaves the stomach

Together, these effects may help you:

  • feel satisfied sooner
  • reduce cravings
  • eat less

“The main difference is how the medication is delivered. Wegovy injections are given under the skin once a week, while Wegovy pills are taken daily and absorbed through the stomach.

“Because oral semaglutide is absorbed less efficiently, the pills must be taken on an empty stomach with a small amount of plain water, and you need to wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else.”

Are Wegovy pills as effective as weight loss injections?

In clinical trials, Wegovy pills produced an average weight loss of around 14% over 64 weeks.

To put 14% into context, that’s a loss of around 33lbs from an average starting weight of 235lbs. Research consistently shows that losing just 5-10% of your body weight can lead to real health benefits, including lower blood pressure and better cholesterol.

In comparison, Wegovy produced an average weight loss of 21% during the STEP UP trial, while Mounjaro saw an average of 22.5% over 72 weeks.

Whether you’re on pills or taking injections, your individual weight loss may be higher or lower than these figures.

It all depends on how you respond to the treatment, how consistent you are when taking your medication, and the other healthy habits you build as part of your journey.

Why would you switch from weight loss injections to Wegovy tablets?

There are plenty of good reasons why someone might want to move from injections to a daily pill. Here are some of the most common ones.

It's more convenient to store

You need to store injections in the fridge, and once you've used them, you need to dispose of the needles safely using a sharps bin.

Wegovy pills, on the other hand, don't need refrigeration. You just keep them at room temperature in their original bottle. That's a lot simpler if you travel regularly, don't have easy access to a fridge at work, or find the storage side of things a bit of a hassle.

It's easier to administer

For some people, self-injecting isn’t appealing. Whether it's needle anxiety or a medical condition that makes injecting harder, the prospect of a weekly jab can be a barrier. A once-daily pill may be more suitable.

You're in a maintenance phase

If you've already lost a significant amount of weight with injections and you're looking for a longer-term option that fits more naturally into your daily routine, switching to a pill might feel like a more sustainable approach for weight loss maintenance.

However, this should always be discussed with your prescriber to see if it’s a suitable option for you.

You simply prefer pills

Some people just prefer taking a pill to using an injection. That's a completely valid reason to consider switching, and your preferences matter when it comes to sticking with a treatment long-term.

How to switch from injections to tablets

It's important to note that you should never switch from one weight loss medication to another without speaking to your prescriber first.

The right approach will depend on which injection you're currently taking, what dose you're on, and how your body has been responding to treatment.

Here's a general overview of what the process might look like.

Safely switching from Wegovy

Because Wegovy pills and Wegovy injections contain the same active ingredient, switching between them is more straightforward than moving between different drugs.

In most cases, you'd take your last injection as normal, wait seven days, and then begin taking the pill daily. Allowing yourself that gap means you're not doubling up on doses.

There's no direct dose match between the injection and the pill, so your prescriber will decide your starting dose based on your individual circumstances.

The standard pill schedule starts at 1.5mg for the first month, moving up to 4mg, 9mg, and eventually 25mg.

If you're already on a higher dose of the Wegovy injection, it's possible your prescriber may be able to start you at a higher pill dose rather than going back to the beginning, but this will be entirely at their discretion.

We won't know exactly how this works in practice until the pills are available in the UK, so it's something to raise with your clinician when the time comes.

However, at the time of writing, the only official guidance from Novo Nordisk is around switching from the 2.4mg injection strength to the 25mg pill dose.

“In the first one to three months after switching, it's normal for your appetite control to feel a little less consistent than it did on the injection.

“This is because the jab delivers a steady level of medication throughout the week, while the pill's absorption can vary slightly from day-to-day.

“You might notice you feel hungrier later in the day, or that your hunger levels shift from one day to the next. This usually settles down as your dose increases and your body adjusts.”

Safely switching from Mounjaro

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which is a different active ingredient to semaglutide. That means switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy pills may not be as simple.

It’s likely that you’ll take your last Mounjaro injection, wait seven days, and then start the Wegovy pill. Your prescriber will decide on your starting dose based on your current Mounjaro dose and your medical history.

Even if you've been tolerating Mounjaro well, it's usually sensible to start at a lower dose to give your body time to adjust to a new medication.

There may be a transition period where your appetite feels different or weight loss slows temporarily. That's a normal part of changing medication, not a sign that the new treatment isn't working.

As always, don't stop Mounjaro or start Wegovy pills without speaking to your prescriber first.

How to decide if the Wegovy pill is right for you

If you're weighing up whether to switch, it helps to be honest with yourself about what's working and what isn't. The pill isn't the right fit for everyone, so think through the following before committing.

  • Is your current injection treatment working? If you're losing weight steadily and tolerating your injections well, switching might not offer a clear advantage. The injection has a stronger average weight loss result in clinical trials, so if it's working for you, there's no pressure to change.
  • Is the injection causing you problems? If needle anxiety, storage, or the practicalities of injecting are making it hard to stay consistent, pills could be a better fit. Consistency matters more than the method.
  • Do you have a reliable morning routine? The pill only works if you take it the same way every single day. If your wake-up times vary a lot, because of shift work or young children, for example, keeping to the strict fasting requirement may be difficult.
  • Can you take the pill on an empty stomach? If you experience nausea, acid reflux, or stomach discomfort when taking medication without food, the Wegovy pill might not suit you.
  • Do you take other medications in the morning? The pill needs to be taken at least 30 minutes before any other medication. If you have morning medications that can't easily be pushed back, that could be worth discussing with your prescriber.
  • Have you spoken to your clinician? This is the most important one. Your prescriber knows your medical history, your progress, and which option is safest for you. Always make this decision with them, not without them.

Frequently asked questions about switching from weight loss injections to tablets

Are side effects worse on Wegovy pills?

Not necessarily. Because Wegovy pills and Wegovy injections contain the same active ingredient, the side effects were similar during clinical trials.

The most common Wegovy side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation, and stomach pain, and these tend to be more noticeable when you first start treatment or increase your dose.

The one difference is that the injections can sometimes cause mild irritation at the injection site, which obviously won't happen with a pill.

If you're switching from Mounjaro, the side effect profile may feel slightly different as your body adjusts to a new active ingredient, but your clinician will be able to prepare you for what to expect.

Are Wegovy pills cheaper than weight loss injections?

UK pricing for Wegovy pills hasn't been confirmed yet, so we can't say if they'll be cheaper than weight loss injections. We'll update this page as soon as that information is available.

How often do you take Wegovy pills?

Wegovy pills are taken once a day, every morning. They need to be swallowed whole (don't crush, chew, or split them) with no more than 100ml of plain water, on a completely empty stomach.

You then need to wait at least 30 minutes before having food, other drinks, or other medications. Even small changes in how or when you take the pill can affect how well it works.
