The only 5 step skincare routine for men you'll ever need

A skincare routine for men can seem much more complicated than what it is. However, improving the quality of your skin is easy and can have a huge impact!

Whether you’re a complete beginner to skincare or you follow a basic skincare routine already, we have broken down the best skincare routine for men.

No matter your skin type, there are steps to follow that will keep your skin happy and healthy. It’s so simple that anyone can follow.

Why is a skincare routine so important?

Your skin is the largest organ, and just like the rest of your organs you need to take care of it. Having a good skincare routine helps your skin to remain in good condition.

Throughout the day you will shed dead skin cells. An effective routine will help prevent acne, treat wrinkles and help keep your skin looking flawless.

You are exposed to different environmental factors each day, all which can have an impact on your skin. UV rays, pollution and the weather can all be damaging to your skin.

Having a good skincare routine is anti-aging, prevents skin problems in the future and can help boost your self-confidence.

Do men need a skincare routine?

Skincare isn’t just for women. In fact, a man’s skin is different to a woman's, and needs to be looked after differently too.

Men have thicker skin and more collagen. However, they can have overly oily skin. This means that as a man, you are more prone to breakouts.

Men’s skin care products have become increasingly popular recently as men are becoming more aware of the importance of caring for their skin.

Your skincare routine made simple

Before you can start a skincare routine it is important to know what skin type you have. One size doesn’t fit all. Different skin types require different skin care products or different amounts.

You might also find that you need to adjust your skin care depending on the season. In winter you are more prone to dry skin

Normal skin

Step 1: Say goodbye to the day

Cleanse your skin using a cleanser in the morning and at night to get rid of any oil, dirt or build-up. Cleansing your skin will allow the rest of your skincare regime to work effectively.

Step 2: Exfoliate a couple of times a week

Use an exfoliator to give your skin a good scrub 1-2 times per week. Exfoliating will help to buff away dead skin cells.

Step 3: Toner

Toner helps to get your skin extra-clean. The cleaner your skin is the harder your serum and moisturiser work.

Step 4: Seek out a serum

A few drops of serum can deliver incredible results. Serum’s are a great way to target any specific skin concerns you might have.

Step 5: Hydrate with a moisturiser

Moisturising your face will help to keep your skin looking and feeling smooth and supple. There are many different types of moisturiser. If you have normal skin you are lucky and can take your pick.

Even if you have normal skin, it is important to add an SPF into your daily skincare regime. It will help to protect your skin from the sun and prevent premature ageing.

Oily skin

Step 1: Cleanse the day away

With oily skin, the first thing you want to do is grab yourself a cleanser that is designed to unclog pores and get rid of excess build-up. A shine fighting cleanser is your starting point if you have oily skin.

Step 2: Exfoliate for a radiant new you

If you have oily skin then you need to make sure you exfoliate a couple of times each week. Exfoliating will help to free your skin of anything clogging up your pores.

Step 3: Use a toner to restore balance

Make sure you take care when using a toner if you have oily skin. If you use the wrong toner you could end up drying your skin out, encouraging it to produce more oil. Your best option is a balancing toner!

Step 4: Boost that moisture with serum

When you have oily skin it is important to choose the right serum. Hyaluronic acid is a brilliant option. It provides gentle moisture without clogging pores.

Step 5: Don’t skip the moisturiser

If you skip the moisturiser it can encourage your skin to create more oil. Opt for a featherweight moisturiser to give you the best results. A non-comedogenic moisturiser is a good option as it won’t clog your pores and cause acne.

Always remember to add an SPF into your skincare routine.

Combination skin

When it comes to combination skin, it is usually the t-zone (forehead, nose and chin) that are the most prone to oiliness. The dry areas are normally around the cheeks, jaw area and hairline.

Step 1: Cleanse your skin

For combination skin you should use a cleanser to remove any build-up that has occurred overnight or in the day.

You should change your cleanser to match each season. Use a hydrating cleanser in winter when your skin is drier. When the summer hits, use a stronger cleanser as your skin can become more oily.

Step 2: Exfoliate once a week

Using an exfoliator is key for removing dead skin cells. It will also keep your pores clear and relieve any dry areas.

Step 3: Tone your face

Use a toner to get rid of any oil the cleanser or exfoliator didn’t remove. This will help to balance your skin’s pH levels. Choose an alcohol-free toner.

Step 4: Use a serum to hydrate

Keep your skin hydrated with a serum. For combination skin you should use a serum with hyaluronic acid.

Step 5: Moisturiser

With combination skin you’ll need 2 moisturisers. Choose a creamy formula for dry areas and a light-weight, water-based formula for oily areas.

Remember to use a lightweight SPF moisturiser to protect yourself from the sun.

Dry skin

Step 1: Give yourself a blank canvas with a cleanser

If you have dry skin then you will want to opt for a gentle hydrating cleanser. This will prevent upsetting your skin even more. Micellar water is the perfect choice. It will clean your skin without stripping natural oils.

Step 2: Exfoliate once a week

When your skin is dry it is important not to over-exfoliate. Select a gentle exfoliator and exfoliate once a week.

Step 3: Tone once a day

Those with dry skin can skip toning if necessary. If you use a toner make sure that it is alcohol free and only use it once a day to avoid drying out your skin further.

Step 4: Use a serum to smooth your skin

Opt for a serum that contains mostly natural ingredients. This will mean there is less chance of irritation to your skin.

Step 5: Rehydrate with a moisturiser

Dehydrated skin needs extra moisture. When it comes to selecting a moisturiser, choose one that has been formulated for dry skin. To keep yourself protected from the sun try and use a formula with SPF.

Sensitive skin

Step 1: But first, cleanser

Use a cleansing milk or micellar water to help soothe your skin.

Step 2: Limit exfoliating to once a week

When you have sensitive skin you should only exfoliate once a week. Be gentle when you exfoliate.

Step 3: Get clean skin with toner

If you know your skin is highly sensitive to certain ingredients then you should always choose a toner with the least amount of ingredients.

Step 4: Serum

The gentle properties in hyaluronic acid make it the perfect addition to your skincare routine. Acids have many benefits for your skin!

Step 5: Hydrate with a sensitive moisturiser

Opt for a moisturiser that is hypoallergenic and fragrance-free. Your sensitive skin still deserves to be hydrated.

Before leaving the house ensure you apply an SPF to your skin to prevent your skin from suffering from sun damage.

Optional skincare extras!

Eye cream

Eye creams are great to add into your skincare routine. They can help with dark circles and fine lines. Eye creams are different to moisturiser, they are formulated specifically for the delicate skin around the eye.

Lip balm

Using a lip balm is important to keep those lips from chapping, especially in the winter months.

Face masks

Face masks are a brilliant addition to any skincare routine. They help target key areas by delivering concentrated vitamins, additives and nutrients to your skin.

So, no matter what skin type you have there will always be a routine perfect for you to follow. Caring for your skin doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, it is simple.

If you want to keep your youthful looks, following a 5 step skincare regime is your starting point!
