What are Balance Activ Pessaries?
Balance Activ Pessaries are a treatment which helps to ease symptoms of Bacterial Vaginosis or BV. What is bacterial vaginosis (BV)?
Bacterial Vaginosis, which is also known as BV, is a common infection of the vagina. Although many women who have BV don’t have any symptoms at all, there are some common symptoms that you could notice when you have this infection:
- Greyish-white vaginal discharge
- Thin and watery discharge
- A strong fishy smell, particularly after sex
- Occasional discomfort
How will Balance Activ Pessaries help to ease my BV?
Balance Activ Pessaries contain the ingredient lactic acid, which helps to ease symptoms of BV by helping to restore the natural pH balance of your vagina. They also contain an ingredient called glycogen, which helps to support the growth of lactobacilli, a protective bacterium which helps your body to maintain a healthy balance of vaginal flora.
Can I use these pessaries if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?
Balance Activ Pessaries are safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, although you should speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using any new medication at this time. If you are pregnant and think that you may have a vaginal infection you should speak to your doctor as soon as possible.
Can I use this product if I’m taking any other medication?
If you’re taking other medication, including those you obtained without a prescription, you should speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using this product. Some products can interact when used together, causing unwanted side effects or making your medication less effective.
Can I use these products if I’m trying to become pregnant?
You should not use these pessaries if you are trying to become pregnant, as they may create an environment which makes it more difficult for sperm to travel through your vagina. However, this product does not contain spermicide and should not be used as a method of contraception.
How to use these pessaries
Before using this product, wash your hands thoroughly and remove the pessary from its wrapping. Sit or lie down with your knees bent and your legs apart, then gently insert the pessary into your vagina using your fingers. This drug is used to treat bacterial infections. If you take this medication while using birth control pills, it decreases the hormone levels in your birth control pills. This decrease in hormone levels can affect whether ovulation is prevented.
I've just bought the pessaries following advice from the gp, however no where specifies how long to leave it in for or if it needs to be removed. Please could you advise?
You do not remove them , it stays there, until it is effective.
I’m 4 days into using the BV Balance Activ pessaries & I’ve woken up with a brown discharge. Is this normal?

I’m unsure if I have BV or thrush, I’m leaning more towards thrush as I have more of the symptoms for it however I definitely have an unpleasant smell which relates more to BV. Is it possible to have both, can I take fluconazole and use balance activ at the same time?
Please review our guide https://www.chemist-4-u.com/guides/female-health/bv-or-thrush/. and you can use both together.
