What is fluconazole and when is it used?
Fluconazole 150mg capsule is a treatment which can be used for vaginal thrush (Candidal vaginitis), thrush affecting the penis (Candidal balanitis), and other kinds of fungal infections throughout the body. It belongs to a class of drugs called azole antifungals and works by stopping the growth of certain types of fungus. This means that fluconazole works for thrush by targeting the source of infection, working quickly and effectively to provide relief.
What are the symptoms of thrush?
Thrush has many common symptoms that you may notice if you are suffering from this condition. Some of the most common symptoms of thrush include:
- A white, cottage cheese-like discharge
- Itching around the outside of the vagina
- Soreness, redness, or irritation of the penis or vagina
- Stinging or soreness while peeing or during sex
How will Fluconazole work for thrush?
Vaginal thrush is the common term for a fungal infection that affects your vagina with a type of fungi called Candida Albicans. This infection causes a white discharge and inflammation inside and around your vagina. In men, penile thrush causes soreness and redness of the penis, tightness of the foreskin, or white, odourless discharge.
Fluconazole targets the Candida fungi causing the thrush infection by interfering with their cell membranes. It works by stopping the fungi from producing a substance called ergosterol, which is an essential component of fungal cell membranes. The disruption in production of ergosterol causes holes to appear in the fungal cell membrane, keeping them from thriving and helping to restore the balance of natural bacteria in your body.
What causes thrush?
Thrush is caused when the delicate balance between the good bacteria and natural yeasts that live in the body is disrupted. This can happen for several reasons, including:
- Some medicines and antibiotics
- Sexual activity
- Tampons
- Stress
- Perfumed soap, shower gels or bubble baths
- Menstruation
- Wearing tight clothing

Can I take these for oral thrush
No, fluconazole capsules aren't for Oral Thrush, you need Daktarin Oral Gel https://www.chemist-4-u.com/daktarin-oral-gel-15g
Can I take these to help repair my toenails?
Fluconazole isn't suitable to treat fungal nail infections
Treatment isn't always needed for a mild fungal nail infection because it's unlikely to cause any further problems and you may feel it's not worth treating.
Whether you decide to have treatment or not, you should still practise good foot hygiene (see below) to stop the infection getting worse or spreading to others.
Speak to your GP or pharmacist if you're bothered by the appearance of the affected nail, or it's causing problems such as pain and discomfort. They'll probably recommend:
- antifungal tablets – tablets taken once or twice a day for several months
- antifungal nail paints – special paints applied directly to the nail over several months
- nail softening kits – where a paste is used to soften infected parts of the nail before they're removed with a scraping device
A procedure to remove the nail completely may be recommended in severe cases. Laser treatment, where a high-energy laser is used to destroy the fungus, is also an option. But this is only available privately and can be expensive.
Can this be used for tinea versicolor
Treatment for tinea versicolor may include: Medicine applied to the skin: This is the most common treatment. There are anti-fungal shampoos, soaps, creams, and lotions that can keep the yeast under control. The active ingredient in these medicines is often selenium (Selsun) & ketoconazole (Nizoral)
I have ankylosing spondylitis and am treated with humira (adalimumab) via injection once every 2 weeks. With this condition and medication is taking Fluconazole and daktarin oral gel safe or is this a contraindication?
No interactions were found between your selected drugs. This does not necessarily mean no interactions exist. Always consult your doctor if you experience any side effects
