Popular Medicines & Treatments

What are over-the-counter medicines?

You can purchase over-the-counter medicines from pharmacies, like ourselves at Chemist4U, without needing a prescription.

This is because these medicines are typically used to treat mild to moderate conditions that aren’t serious enough to need prescription-strength treatment from your GP.

Unlike medicines you can pick up off the shelf yourself, however, a pharmacist will need to ask you a few questions before you can go ahead and purchase over-the-counter medicines.

To buy an over-the-counter medicine at Chemist4U, you’ll just need to complete a short medical questionnaire so our pharmacists can be sure the treatment is right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to use clove oil for toothache

If you have toothache, it’s best to book in at your local dentist to get it checked out - but if you need a temporary fix for that nagging pain, clove oil is a great solution.

Clove oil works by numbing the nerve tissue due to its natural anaesthetic properties.

Care must be taken when applying, for example, do not pour the clove oil directly onto the affected area; if it reaches your gums or tongue, it could worsen the pain.

Use a cotton ball to soak up the clove oil and hold it against the affected area for 20 minutes.

If you don’t have clove oil available, you can use powdered clove or try chewing a whole clove with the affected tooth; oil from the clove should be released to soothe the pain.

What is cetirizine used for?

Cetirizine is a non-drowsy antihistamine that is used to treat many allergies including hay fever, conjunctivitis, eczema, hives, stings, insect bites, and some food allergies.

You may recognise cetirizine by the brand names Benadryl, Piriteze, and Zirtek. Cetirizine is available as an over-the-counter medicine.

How does ibuprofen gel work?

Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory medicine and works by stopping the production of chemicals in your body that are causing pain.

When it is applied to your skin as a gel, it will only affect the applied area. It absorbs into your skin and travels to the area of inflammation (such as your muscle) and relieves pain.

You will also be less likely to suffer side effects from using ibuprofen in gel form compared to an oral tablet or liquid formula.

What is codeine linctus?

Codeine linctus is a type of cough medicine that helps to relieve the symptoms of dry, persistent coughs.

It works by decreasing the urge to cough, allowing your throat time to heal.

Please be aware that codeine linctus is an opioid and can be very addictive, therefore it should only be used for a short period of time; and, if possible, you should consider using another variant of cough medicine with a lower potential for dependence.

Due to this risk, this medicine is only available on prescription.

Which cough syrup do I need?

Choosing the right cough medicine can be as irritating as the cough itself.

There are lots of different types to choose from - treatments tailored for tickly and chesty coughs, to medicines designed to be taken at night and during the day.

It’s important to recognise the type of cough that you have - is it dry or chesty? Does it trouble you more at night or during the day?

If you’re struggling to understand the type of cough you have, speak to a pharmacist and they will be able to help you choose a suitable treatment.

What are the best sleeping pills?

It can be frustrating when you can’t sleep - tossing, turning, and becoming stressed about how much sleep you can get before that dreaded alarm clock sound.

Sleeping medication can come in the form of herbal remedies and over-the-counter medicines.

Herbal treatments include valerian root, hops, and passionflower, which work by providing a natural sedative by relieving feelings of anxiety and restlessness.

Over-the-counter treatments may include the active ingredients diphenhydramine and promethazine, found in Phenergan, Nytol, and Sominex.

There are also a range of prescription-strength sleeping pills such as Z-drugs and benzodiazepines if other remedies haven’t relieved your insomnia.

Prescription Strength Treatments

Prescription-only medicines can be strong with the potential for side effects or misuse.

For this reason, they are only available from a doctor or certain medical professionals like one of our prescribing pharmacists.

Before you are prescribed a medicine, one of our prescribers will assess relevant factors such as your age, your weight, any allergies, medical conditions, and any other medication you are currently taking.

This is so we can be certain that a prescription-strength medicine is definitely the best option for you.
