What are Calpol Sachets?

Calpol Infant Suspension Sachets are a pain relief medicine which can help to ease pain and fever in children aged 2 months to 6 years. It’s ideal for little ones who are suffering with aches and pains, such as headaches or teething pain, and has a delicious strawberry flavour that kids will love.

 

Why would I give my children this medicine?

Calpol is a popular remedy that many parents use to ease their child’s pain and fever, and it can be used to treat many different problems, including:

  • Headache
  • Toothache
  • Teething pain
  • Earache
  • Sore throat
  • Other aches and pains
  • Fever or high temperature
  • Cold and flu symptoms
  • Post-immunisation fever

 

How will this product help to relieve my child’s pain and fever?

Each sachet contains 5ml of Calpol Infant Suspension, which contains 120mg of the active ingredient paracetamol. This is a popular painkiller which helps to ease many everyday aches and pains and can also be used to reduce fever or high temperatures.

 

Can adults take this medicine?

Adults and children over 6 can take this medicine, but you should speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before use as they may recommend a more suitable product. If adults do take this medicine, then there are extra warnings that they will need to consider:

  • You can use this medicine if you are taking oral contraceptives, or the pill, but you it may not be as effective at treating your pain or fever
  • If you drink large amounts of alcohol you may be more likely to experience the side effects of this medication
  • Speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using this or any other medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

 

Can I give Calpol to my child if they are taking other medication?

You should not give Calpol Infant Suspension to your child if they are taking other medication which contains paracetamol. If your child is taking any other medication, including those obtained without prescription, speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before giving them this product. This includes:

  • Metoclopramide or domperidone, which are used to treat nausea and vomiting
  • Colestyramine, which is used to treat high cholesterol
  • Anticoagulants, or blood thinners, such as warfarin
  • Anticonvulsants, which are used to treat epilepsy

 

How to take Calpol Infant Suspension Sachets

Each Calpol Infant Suspension Sachet contains 5ml of medicine, so you can easily measure the right dose of medicine for your child onto the handy measuring spoon provided. The measuring spoon has 2 sides, one which measures 2.5ml and one which measures 5ml. Open the sachet and squeeze the medicine onto whichever side of the spoon will measure the correct dose for your child, and use to give your child the medicine. Wash the spoon well after use. Discard any unused contents of each open sachet after use.

 

How much of this medicine will my child need?

The amount of Calpol your child will need to take depends on their age and what you want to use this medicine for. To treat pain or fever, take the following doses:

  • Infants aged 2 – 3 months who weigh more than 4kg or 8.8lbs and were born after 37 weeks: Give one 2.5ml dose. Give a second 2.5ml dose (half a sachet) after 4 – 6 hours if needed.
  • Infants aged 3 – 6 months: Give a 2.5ml dose (half a sachet) up to 4 times a day
  • Children aged 6 – 24 months: Give a 5ml dose up to 4 times a day
  • Children aged 2 – 4 years: Give a 7.5ml dose (one and a half sachets) up to 4 times a day
  • Children aged 4 – 6 years: Give a 10ml dose (two sachets) up to 4 times a day
  • Adults and children over the age of 6: Ask your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist to recommend a more suitable product

Do not give more than 4 doses in any 24-hour period. Leave at least 4 hours between each dose. Do not take more than the recommended daily dose.

To treat post-immunisation fever in infants aged 2 – 4 months, give one 2.5ml dose (half a sachet) up to 4 times a day starting from the time of vaccination. Do not give more than 4 doses in any 24-hour period and leave at least 4 hours between each dose.

 

When should Calpol Sachets not be used?

Calpol Sachets are not suitable for children under the age of 2 months, or children aged 2 – 3 months who weigh less than 4kg or 8.8lbs or were born before 37 weeks. Do not use this product if you are allergic to paracetamol or any of the other listed ingredients.

 

Does this medicine have any side effects?

Like all medication, Calpol Sachets can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. These include:

  • Allergic reactions, e.g. swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, difficulty swallowing, unexplained wheezing, shortness of breath which may be accompanied by skin rash or hives
  • Becoming unusually tired, unexpected bruising or bleeding, getting more infections (e.g. colds) than usual
  • Very rare cases of serious skin reactions, showing symptoms such as skin reddening, blisters, rash

How to store these sachets

Store in a cool, dry place which is below 25 degrees C. Store in original packaging, keeping sachets in outer carton. Do not use once expiry date printed on packaging has passed. Keep out of sight and reach of children.
