What are Viagra Connect Melts?

Viagra Connect Melts are an over-the-counter treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED) in men aged 18 years and over. Each film contains 50mg of sildenafil and dissolves on your tongue without needing water.

They help you achieve and maintain an erection, but only when you're sexually stimulated. Unlike standard tablets, the film is orodispersible, meaning it dissolves quickly on your tongue without needing water. This can make it a convenient option if you prefer not to swallow tablets or don't have water to hand.

How do Viagra Connect Melts work?

Viagra Connect Melts work by increasing blood flow to your penis, making it easier to get and keep an erection when you're sexually aroused.

The active ingredient, sildenafil, belongs to a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. During sexual stimulation, your body naturally increases blood flow to the penis. Sildenafil helps this process work more effectively by relaxing your blood vessels, making it easier to get and keep an erection.

It won't increase your sex drive or cause an erection on its own, so you'll still need to be sexual stimulated for the treatment to work.

How long do Viagra Connect Melts last?

Viagra Connect Melts typically work for up to four hours, although this can vary from person to person. Most men find the medicine starts working within 30 to 60 minutes, provided they are sexually stimulated.

The length of time the medicine remains effective depends on several factors, including your age, overall health and whether you've recently eaten a large or high-fat meal, which may delay how quickly sildenafil begins to work.

Although the medicine can remain active for around four hours, this does not mean you'll have a continuous erection throughout that time. You'll simply be able to achieve an erection more easily.

How effective are Viagra Connect Melts?

In clinical studies, the sildenafil in Viagra Connect Melts has been found to help 74% of men taking the treatment achieve and maintain an erection.

If you've tried Viagra Connect Melts several times and they're not effective, speak to your GP or pharmacist. Erectile dysfunction can sometimes be a sign of an underlying health condition, like diabetes, high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease, which may need further assessment.

How to take Viagra Connect Melts

When using Viagra Connect Melts:

  1. Take one Viagra Connect Melt around one hour before you plan to have sex.
  2. Remove one film from the sachet and place it on your tongue.
  3. Allow it to dissolve completely before swallowing. You don't need to take it with water.

For the best results:

  • Take only one 50mg film in a 24-hour period, even it doesn’t work the first time.
  • Avoid heavy or high-fat meals, as they may delay how quickly your treatment starts to work.
  • Avoid drinking large amounts of alcohol, as it can make it harder to get an erection.

Viagra Connect Melts vs Viagra vs Viagra Connect

Viagra Connect Melts, Viagra and Viagra Connect all contain sildenafil, all take 30-60 minutes to work, and all last up to four hours. However, there are some key differences to be aware of:

Viagra Connect Melts side effects

Like all medicines, Viagra Connect Melts can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Most side effects are mild and improve on their own as the medicine wears off.

Common Viagra side effects include:

  • headache
  • facial flushing
  • indigestion
  • feeling sick (nausea)
  • dizziness
  • blocked or runny nose
  • changes to your vision, like blurred vision or a blue tinge

These side effects are usually short-lived and don't require medical treatment unless they become severe or persistent.

Stop taking Viagra Connect Melts and seek urgent medical attention immediately if you experience:

  • an erection lasting longer than four hours
  • sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes
  • sudden decrease or loss of hearing/ ringing in the ears or dizziness
  • chest pain during or after sexual activity
  • signs of a serious allergic reaction

If you're worried about any side effects, speak to your pharmacist, GP or another healthcare professional for advice.

Who shouldn't take Viagra Connect Melts?

Viagra Connect Melts aren't suitable for everyone. Before buying them, your pharmacist will ask a few questions to make sure they're safe for you.

Do not take them if you:

  • are allergic to sildenafil or any of the ingredients.
  • take medicines containing nitrates for chest pain or heart disease.
  • use nitric oxide donors, like amyl nitrite ("poppers").
  • have been advised to avoid sexual activity because of a serious heart condition.
  • have severe liver disease.
  • have very low blood pressure.
  • have recently had a heart attack or stroke.
  • have certain inherited eye conditions, like retinitis pigmentosa, or have previously experienced vision loss linked to reduced blood flow to the optic nerve.

During your pharmacy consultation, you'll be asked questions about your health and any medicines you're taking to make sure Viagra Connect Melts are a safe option for you.

Alternatives to Viagra Connect Melts

If Viagra Connect Melts aren't the right option for you, there are several other treatments available for erectile dysfunction. This includes other Viagra-based treatments like Viagra Connect tablets and generic sildenafil.

There are also alternatives to Viagra, including:

  • Tadalafil (Cialis): can remain effective for up to 36 hours, making it a popular option for those who prefer greater flexibility. Also available over the counter as Cialis Together.
  • Vardenafil (Levitra): works similarly to sildenafil and is suitable for some men who don't respond well to other treatments.
  • Avanafil (Spedra): may start working more quickly than some other ED medicines, with effects typically beginning within 15 to 30 minutes.

Frequently asked questions about Viagra Connect Melts

Are Viagra Connect Melts as strong as Viagra?

Yes. Viagra Connect Melts contain the same 50mg dose of sildenafil as 50mg Viagra tablets, so they work in the same way. The main difference is that the melt dissolves on your tongue instead of being swallowed with water.

Can you drink alcohol with Viagra Connect Melts?

You can drink alcohol while taking Viagra Connect Melts, but it's best to do so in moderation. Drinking large amounts of alcohol can make it more difficult to get or maintain an erection and may increase the likelihood of side effects like dizziness or low blood pressure.

If you're planning to take Viagra Connect Melts, limiting your alcohol intake may help the medicine work more effectively.
