Spedra tablets are an erectile dysfunction treatment that uses an active ingredient called avanafil to help you get and maintain an erection. If you, like many men, are struggling to get hard when you have sex, Spedra can help you regain your confidence in the bedroom. Just take one tablet before you’re going to have sex and see the effects within 15-30 minutes.

How Spedra works

Spedra contains an active ingredient called avanafil, which is a type of medication called PDE5 inhibitors. These medications treat erectile dysfunction by helping the blood vessels in your penis to relax, letting blood flow to the area more easily. Increased blood flow is an essential part of getting an erection, so by relaxing your blood vessels, Spedra can help you to get and maintain an erection when sexually stimulated.

Take one Spedra tablet 15 - 30 minutes before you plan to have sex. Leave an interval of at least 2 days between each dose.

Side Effects

Like all medications, Spedra can have side effects, although you may not experience them yourself. The most common side effects of this medication include:

  • Headaches
  • Flushing
  • Nasal congestion
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling sleepy or tired
  • Sinus congestion
  • Back pain
  • Hot flushes
  • Feeling out of breath
  • Heartbeat changes
  • An increased heartbeat
  • Feeling your heartbeat in your chest (palpitations)
  • Indigestion, feeling sick, or being sick
  • Blurry vision
  • Raised liver enzymes

If you experience these or any other side effects while taking Spedra you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible. For a complete list of potential side effects see the patient information leaflet included with your medication.

Serious side effects

If you experience any of the following serious side effects while taking Spedra you should stop taking this medication and seek immediate medical attention from your local A&E department or through 999, if necessary.

  • An erection that lasts longer than 4 hours
  • Blurred vision
  • A sudden decrease or loss of vision in one or both eyes
  • A sudden decrease or loss of hearing which may also be accompanied by dizziness or ringing in your ears

Do not take Spedra if you are allergic to avanafil or any of the other ingredients included in this medication. You should not take this medication if you:

  • Have a serious cardiac problem
  • Have had a stroke or heart attack within the past 6 months
  • Have low or high blood pressure which is not controlled by medicines
  • Have chest pain or angina or get chest pain during sex
  • Have serious liver or kidney problems
  • Have loss of vision in one eye caused by not enough blood getting to your eye
  • Have a family history of serious eye problems such as retinitis pigmentosa

Food & Drink

Spedra can be taken with food or on an empty stomach, but it is important to note that taking it with food can mean that it takes longer to work. You should avoid drinking grapefruit juice for at least 24 hours before taking this medication as it can lead to you accidentally receiving a higher dose of avanafil than you need.

We do not recommend drinking alcohol while taking Spedra as it can increase your chances of experiencing the side effects of this medication. Alcohol can also make it more difficult for you to get an erection.

Other medications

You should tell your prescriber about any other medications you are taking during your consultation for Spedra. Some medications can interact with this treatment, changing the way your medication behaves and causing unwanted side effects. You should not take Spedra if you are already taking:

  • "Nitrate" medicines, which are used for chest pain, for example, amyl nitrate or glyceryl nitrate
  • Medicines for HIV or AIDS, for example, ritonavir, indinavir, saquinavir, nelfinavir, or atazanavir
  • Antifungal treatments, for example, ketoconazole, itraconazole, or voriconazole
  • Antibiotics for bacterial infections, for example, clarithromycin or telithromycin
  • Riociguat, which is used to treat high blood pressure in the lungs

Age restrictions

Spedra is not suitable for use in children or anyone under the age of 18.

Driving and using machinery

While taking Spedra should not affect your ability to drive or use machinery, some of its side effects may affect your vision or ability to make judgements. If you experience any dizziness, changes to your vision, or any other symptoms that may affect your judgement you should not attempt to drive or use machinery until you are absolutely sure that your symptoms have passed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction, sometimes known as impotence, is a common problem amongst men and may be caused by age, being overweight, smoking, drinking too much alcohol, or having a medical condition like diabetes, high blood pressure, or cardiovascular disease.

The inability to create or maintain an erection happens when there isn’t enough blood flowing to the penis, if the penis cannot trap blood, or when the nerve signals don’t send the signal of arousal to the penis.

Diabetes can cause nerve damage in the penis, in addition to certain cancer treatments affecting its functionality.
