What are Rennie Orange Chewable Indigestion Tablets?

Rennie Orange Chewable Indigestion Tablets are a fast and effective treatment against heartburn and indigestion symptoms. These orange flavour tablets are a great alternative to regular mint flavour antacids, relieving heartburn and indigestion symptoms with the same effectiveness.

How should I take these tablets?

Adults and children over 12 should chew or suck on 2 tablets, as required, preferably 1 hour after meals or before you go to bed. For heartburn, an extra 2 tablets may be taken between these times. You must not take more than 16 tablets in one 24-hour period. Rennie Orange should not be used for more than 14 days without consulting a doctor. You should avoid taking these tablets with large amounts of milk or dairy products.

How does the calcium carbonate in these tablets treat indigestion?

Rennie Orange Chewable Indigestion Tablets contain 500mg of calcium carbonate. Calcium carbonate provides indigestion relief by neutralising acid in the stomach and oesophagus, quickly turning it into water.

Do I have indigestion symptoms?

Indigestion, also known as acid reflux, can be characterised by two main symptoms:

  • Dyspepsia: Pain or discomfort in your upper abdomen

  • Heartburn: A burning pain behind the breastbone

These symptoms are extremely common and can occur together or on their own. Indigestion symptoms are often associated with bloating, feeling sick, wind, an acidic taste in the mouth, or regurgitating fluid or food into the oesophagus.

What causes indigestion symptoms?

Indigestion symptoms occur when stomach acid travels up into the oesophagus towards your throat, causing discomfort in your upper abdomen or a burning sensation in your chest. This most commonly occurs after eating or when you’re lying down, but sometimes there may be an underlying cause that could be resulting in frequent indigestion symptoms. These can include:

  • Pregnancy

  • Being overweight or obese

  • Anxiety

  • Smoking

  • Stomach ulcers

  • GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)

Are Rennie Orange tablets suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women?

Rennie Orange tablets can be taken for indigestion relief if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, as long as you take them as instructed. If you need any guidance about indigestion relief in pregnancy, feel free to contact a Chemist4U pharmacist.

Are these tablets suitable for children?

Children under 12 should not take Rennie Orange. If your child is experiencing indigestion symptoms, consult a Chemist4U pharmacist for advice and possible alternative treatments. If your child’s indigestion symptoms persist for more than 14 days, you should consult a doctor.

When should Rennie Orange tablets not be used?

Rennie Orange tablets are usually suitable for most adults and children over 12. However, you must not take Rennie Orange if you:

  • Have severe kidney disease

  • Have high calcium in the urine or kidney stones

  • Have high calcium or phosphate levels in the blood

  • Are allergic to any of the ingredients

It is best to take Rennie tablets 1-2 hours after any other medicines to maximise the benefit of all medicines being used. Consult a doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist before taking these indigestion tablets if you take any of the following medicines:

  • Tetracyclines and quinolones (antibiotics)

  • Levothyroxine (a thyroid hormone)

  • Eltrombopag (used to increase the number of platelets)

  • Digoxin (used for some heart conditions)

  • Thiazide diuretics (water tablets to treat fluid retention and high blood pressure)

  • Fluorides (for preventing dental caries)

  • Phosphates (for clearing the bowel before a surgical procedure)

  • Iron supplements

As Rennie Orange contains sucrose, you should consult your doctor before use if you have been told you are intolerant to some sugars.

Are there any side effects?

As with all medicines, these tablets can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. As long as you take the recommended dose as instructed, you’re unlikely to experience any side effects at all from Rennie Orange.

Rarely, allergic reactions have been reported. If you experience any of the following signs of an allergic reaction, stop treatment immediately and seek medical advice:

  • Rash

  • Itching

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Swelling of the face, mouth or throat

  • Anaphylactic shock (symptoms of which are low blood pressure, shock, palpitations, difficulty breathing, bronchospasm, skin reactions, abdominal pain or cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea)

Long term use in high doses can cause high blood levels of calcium, especially in people with kidney conditions. Symptoms of this may include:

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Upset stomach

  • Diarrhoea

  • Tiredness

  • Muscular weakness

  • Headache

  • Kidney problems

  • Impaired sense of taste

In exceptionally rare cases, long term use in high doses can lead to milk alkali syndrome, which can cause high blood levels of calcium.
