What are Rennie Ice Indigestion & Heartburn Relief Tablets?

Rennie Ice is an effective treatment against heartburn and indigestion. These mint flavour tablets work by using cooling agents that help to cool the burning sensation associated with heartburn. The active ingredients in these heartburn tablets are calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate, both of which work to turn excess acid into water.

Do I have heartburn symptoms?

Feeling the burn in your chest? It’s most likely that you’re suffering from heartburn, also referred to as acid reflux or indigestion. Typical heartburn symptoms include:

  • A burning sensation in your chest, usually occurring after eating or at night time.

  • Pain that worsens when lying down or bending over

  • A bitter or acidic taste in your mouth

Heartburn occurs when stomach acid travels up towards the throat. It’s extremely common, usually nothing to worry about, and easily treated with heartburn tablets (antacids). If you suffer frequent or severe heartburn symptoms you may have an underlying condition, or you might need to make some lifestyle changes. Causes of heartburn include:

  • Certain food and drink, such as spicy foods, chocolate, or caffeinated drinks

  • Being overweight

  • Smoking

  • Pregnancy

  • Stress and anxiety

  • Some medicines, such as anti-inflammatory painkillers like ibuprofen.

  • A hiatus hernia (when part of your stomach moves up into your chest)

  • GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)

How do Rennie Ice heartburn tablets work?

Rennie Ice contains 680mg of calcium carbonate and 80mg of magnesium carbonate. These ingredients rapidly neutralize acid in the stomach and turns it into water, quickly and effectively relieving heartburn symptoms.

What is the dosage for these tablets and how do I take them?

Rennie Ice Indigestion & Heartburn Relief Tablets should be sucked or chewed, as required, preferably 1 hour after meals and before bedtime. For heartburn, an extra 2 tablets may be taken between these times. Do not take more than 10 tablets a day. Rennie Ice heartburn tablets should not be used for more than 14 days without consulting a doctor. You should avoid taking these heartburn tablets with large amounts of milk or dairy products.

Who can take Rennie heartburn tablets?

Most adults and children over 12 are safe to take these heartburn tablets. You must not take Rennie Ice Indigestion & Heartburn Relief Tablets if you:

  • Have severe kidney disease

  • Have high calcium in the urine or kidney stones

  • Have high calcium or phosphate levels in the blood

  • Are allergic to any of the ingredients

It is best to take Rennie tablets 1-2 hours after any other medicines to maximise the benefit of all medicines being used. Consult a doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist before taking these heartburn tablets if you take any of the following medicines:

  • Tetracyclines and quinolones (antibiotics)

  • Levothyroxine (a thyroid hormone)

  • Eltrombopag (used to increase the number of platelets)

  • Fluorides (for preventing dental caries)

  • Phosphates (for clearing the bowel before a surgical procedure)

As Rennie Ice contains sucrose, you should consult your doctor before use if you have been told you are intolerant to some sugars.

Can children take this medication?

No, children under 12 should not take these heartburn tablets. If your child is experiencing heartburn symptoms, do not hesitate to consult a Chemist4U pharmacist for advice and possible alternative treatments. If your child’s heartburn symptoms persist for more than 14 days, you should consult a doctor.

Can pregnant or breastfeeding women take these heartburn tablets?

Yes, Rennie Ice heartburn tablets are safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women as long as they’re taken as instructed. It’s always good practice to contact your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist before taking any new medication when you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.

Are there any side effects?

As with all medicines, these heartburn tablets can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. As long as you take the recommended dose as instructed, you’re unlikely to experience any side effects at all from Rennie Ice.

  • Itching

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Swelling of the face, mouth or throat

  • Anaphylactic shock (symptoms of which are low blood pressure, shock, palpitations, difficulty breathing, bronchospasm, skin reactions, abdominal pain or cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea)

  • Upset stomach

  • Diarrhoea

  • Tiredness
